This will be our second regular season workday for 2011. The work days so far and in the future to my knowledge will be the 3rd weekend of every month. So if you want to plan for future work days keep that in mind.

Last work weekend the Forest Service was off on fires and other issues, so we were without a Forest Service representative. Janet Becker was kind enough (even with her broken in 5 places wrist/hand) to get us all signed in for a light duty work day. The weather tried to rain us out, but we still had over 20 people there, and 35 bags of trash picked up. So we weren't able to get any more guard rail installed obviously.

Once again we don't have a work day e-mail yet, and I have no idea what the weather will be like. When I find out more from Terry Savery I will post what I know the work load will be for sure. Right now its 50/50, either a heavy work weekend with guard rail, or a light day with trash pickup, diamonds, etc.

Once again as far as tools go, post hole diggers, tamps, rock bars, shovels, rakes, etc are all good things to bring. Usually the Forest Service has some tools, but you just never know based on how many groups show up. The fact that it was only our NC4X4 group combined with the PlanetIsuzoo folks (I organize their trips) plus maybe 1 other club out I am guessing more clubs/people will be out there.

Tentative Schedule will be:
8AM : Volunteer Breakfast at the Outpost.
9AM : Meet at the Hunt Camp
1PM : LUNCH at the Hotdog Stand (Presumably)

If anything changes when I get the work day e-mail/schedule I will post it up here. Lets hope for clear weather and a great turn out!

We are nearing the 2 week marker and we haven't got much of a head count yet. I know gas keeps going up and up making it harder for people to make trips out, but there is work still to be done out at Uwharrie. Post up even if you think you can make it. There aren't many low-heat workdays left. Lets make them count.

Hey bro I'll be out there but not for the work day this time. I have the East Coast Camp Commander that weekend. I have about 8 Xk's and 3 WK's and a few other jeeps showing up so it should be a good time. If I see you and the guys I'll swing by and say whats up.

not sure if im off that weekend but ill let ya know eli,if i do come im not bring the big green gas guzzler

We have a prior engagement for this weekend, trail cutting day at a buddies land.

Hate to miss it, we will be at the June Work Weekend though.

WEEKEND MIXUP

Guess I need to keep up better. Sunday fell on the 1st, & I was thinking, this weekend was the BIG one. I see the 21st., is the third Saturday. Kinda confusing, but I will be there sat., & will try to make fri.

I talked with Terry Savery this morning before work about the upcoming work day (May), and the work weekend (June). The day before I was talking with Janet Becker and found out Terry wanted to talk to me before sending out the work day e-mail. Learned a couple things, first off is the workday e-mail she sent after our conversation for the May workday:

Hi Everyone - Please let me know if your club will be coming up on the May 21st work weekend, let me know roughly how many people will be coming, and if you'll have any specific equipment. Next week will be relatively low key because it'll be me (and maybe Deb) meeting up with you. The rest of the normal FS folks you work with are either on a fire detail in TX or are on a timber detail on the Croatan so we're a bit shorthanded. Also, we're working with Eli to coordinate a big work weekend for Saturday, June 18th.

I'll be meeting you all at the Uwharrie Hunt Camp at 9 am on Saturday, May 21st. I have the adopt a trail signs for CNC 4x4. We'll have carsonite signs to put up at trail intersections as well. Also, general trash pick up, hauling out of some corduroy crossings and we can armor some stream crossings with rock if you let me know your club will be there with a way to get the rock moved to the site and placed.

Thanks a lot everyone. We appreciate your help. Bye - Terry

For those wondering about the proposed re-route of Saw-Mill they will have more finalized/wrapped up around September. So by the end of September the re-route should be ready to be opened. She also mentioned the re-opening of trail(s) is planned for next year. So that is something to look forward to.

Without equipment I don't see us being able to help with the rock situation, but it will probably be just one more thing we tackle on the work weekend.

What size rocks are we talking about? I move small rocks (under 30-40 lbs) all the time by hand and thats no big deal, tiring, repetitive, but very doable.

Don't really see the need for a FEL for moving rocks

That is something I will talk to her about. Because when I think of rocks placed on the drainage ditch near where we put up guard rail in March (The rocks you had to drive over to get to where we were putting up the rail). Which that was a nice sized amount that would take some kind of equipment. If its just a reasonable amount that could be moved by hand I am sure we could take care of it.

Most likely one man rifraf. Would need a truck or trailer to haul it to the site.

Here is what Terry had to say about the rocks:

The rock will be about 6 to 8 inches in size to armor some crossings. I need to get ahold of Lemonds and have them deliver the rock to the OHV area.

Yeah, easily movable, will keep the people busy

From Recreation Specialist Savery:

Hi Everyone - Sorry for the late timing of the update for this weekends work weekend. We'll be meeting at 9 am at the Uwharrie Hunt Camp. You may not be working on the trail you've adopted but we're stretched a bit thin with 7 people off on fire and timber details. We appreciate you coming up to volunteer this weekend. It sounds like great weather for Saturday. If you'll need campsites contact Janet Becker ASAP. Thanks.

The overall projects will be repairing corduroy crossings, armoring crossings with rock (6 to 8" size), cleaning out tail ditches with shovels and rakes, clearing any down trees and large branches, hauling out old corduroy crossings, repairing some split rail fences, and remarking trails with the diamonds and marking the numbers on the trail markers and picking up trash. If you have a trail trailer please bring it along with straps and chains to haul in supplies for the corduroy crossings and the rock armoring. Bring ratchets or wrenches and sledge hammers. I'll have some of the adopt a trail signs so we'll have them to put up for a few trails. We'll have the rock piled up in Dutch John and we'll have our tractor there to load it into people's trailers. What ever we don't finish this weekend we'll do in June, July....

Thanks a lot everyone. Bye - Terry

First hot dog of the season for me. WHOOOO.:bounce2:

it was nice to see everyone at hunt camp this am. I'm wore out but had fun getting there. We moved a bunch of rock, and cleared out a large tree that was accross the trail. thanks to everyone that helped today we made some good progress on the trail maintenance. See you'll next time.

Thank you Shawn and NC4x4 for the discount on the food, BUT- we worked so hard that we never left the work area!!! Was a good day though. Feel like we did a lot. My back tells me that today... JC can drive that truck and utility trailer like nobody else :D

It was a good day even though we did not get everthing done we had hoped to. We had some issues in the afternoon that put our group to a halt, first the fuel issues in one Jeep then a cut tire on another. My trans was not shifting out of first which was not a problem on the trail but the ride home was not going to happen. I called the wife when I got to Hy. 49 to bring the truck and trailer and I tow my junk home. That's two work days in a row I had to be towed home, I guess crap like this comes in bunches. Great to see everyone again and hope you back don't hurt as bad as mine does. LOL

Big thanks to everyone that showed up, and to Shawn for doing the half off hotdogs with Terry. I was a little bit of a downer that we didn't get all the work done, but considering one club didn't show up and only 1 person from another club showed we got a lot of work done. I am looking forward to seeing the pictures of us winching the tree blocking the trail on Dutch John, the Barricade pictures of us blocking off the trail, and the video of our "technique" of getting rock out of the bed of the truck.

Unlike December work day last year where we worked so long we missed the free dinner, we still made it for a late lunch this time around. Even with the disabled Jeep, and the flat tire the other Jeep had. Thanks to those on the trails the kept at good attitude when they had to turn around while we blocked the trail for about an hour at a time. Again we got a lot done, cut up and moved a downed tree that was across the trail, then used the pieces to block off the illegal bypass around it, cleaned trail ditch(es), winched a dead tree across the entrance to a spider trail, loaded/unloaded 2 truck beds worth of rock and repaired a water crossing with it, and transported logs to the bridge site(s). The other group got another big tree moved on RML, plus repaired a water crossing with rock, and fixed other drainage areas. I know I posted this as a "light" work day, but it was anything but "light". It was a heavy work day just without the equipment.

Thanks to all

I was the one with the cut tire.... I would never have gotten it fixed without the excellent help I got! My 3rd time wheeling, second work day, and the first broken piece. I had a blast!!! I think I'll need a little more experience before I tackle that trail again....

The help on the trail made this a wonderful day. The half price dogs (thanks NC4x4) from Terry were a nice treat. I'll be back at the next work weekend.
