My wife and I are planning on heading to Uwharrie tomorrow morning and taking our 7 month old little girl with us. We will be taking a Honda Pioneer 1000-5 that I have equipped with a car seat up front between the two of us. If I stay on the easy stuff and don’t get crazy do y’all think she will be ok? Will I be breaking any laws? Am I trying to take her to soon? Any advice is appreciated

I don't know anything about kids, but I did go wheeling with my nephew and his car seat ratchet strapped to the back seat of my YJ....he had a blast, he did get stung in the face by a bee, but he walked it off like a man.

I have the car seat ratchet strapped along with the seat belt

Personally I think that's too young. Her head will get jerked around and a 7 month old doesn't have the neck strength to control the motion well. I'm also not an expert, but I don't see it being worth the risk since she won't even remember it.

I very much agree with Matt that 7 months is too young. I waited till my kids were about 1-1/2 to take them out. Also, yes that would be illegal and you’d get a ticket if a ranger saw you, as you can only carry the amount of passengers a vehicle was designed to carry.

I ratchet strap a car seat into my Jeep to the roll cage which is tied into the frame for my 7 year old.

She’d be better off with the Grandparents for the weekend and y’all go have fun. Hell she’d be safer with a sitter you found off of Craigslist than she would be ratchet strapped to SxS running through URE.

I think the fact that you asked if taking her the way you’re taking her is breaking any laws would be red flag number one.

My opinion will probably be in the minority, but roll on. My youngin was wheeling well before 7 months. Just don’t do nothing stupid yet and if it gets rough, hold their head.

That was in the backseat of the LJ and the wife was on neck duty. But it happened.

My boy probably has been on more wheeling trips before he was 1 than most people go on in their life. AOP, Harlan, Moab, just to name a few.

The pioneer has a bench seat up front made for 3 people so the car seat is in a “legal” place. It’s not like I just threw the car seat in there wherever and ratchet strapped it lol. As far as my concern for breaking laws I wasn’t sure if there are any laws regarding a child being too young to ride. But @jeepinmatt is probably right about her not having the neck strength to handle the ride. Guess I will just wait a little longer to take her along

In my opinion, a vehicle is quite different than a SXS. The movements are typically not as abrupt and jarring as a SXS, mostly because the tires are larger and track width/wheelbase are longer/wider.

I'm w/ Matt and others. I took my son the first time around 15 months. Front passenger seat of a 4runner. He slept most of the time.
The neck support thing and jarring movements is what scares me. It really only takes one really good whack to be a major problem. the suspension of a SxS just isn't designed to cushion bumps enough for this.

I'd think of it this way - what are you missing out on by having the youngin' skip the trip, vs what you'll be facing if something bad happens? Doesn't seem worth it to me.
Leave 'em at Grandma's and have a good day being stupid adults.

Me thinks it investigate the manufacturer...didn't they pass some lame stuff applying to atv and it's users? I agree, to young for that type of vehicle.

Going back to the regulations....I almost bet the manufacturer requires users and ocupants to be of a certain age.

I didn't start with my daughter until she was 16 months, and then I had a horseshoe pillow around her neck in the car seat. as said, 7 months the neck strength is not there to keep them from bobbing their head and causing possible damage.

Have you never been in a SXS? For starters, the footprint of the larger ones is pretty much the same as a TJ. And with IFS/IRS, they're a lot smoother than a TJ, and miles better than a YJ.

Our kids were wheeling when they were that young. Cyd sat in the back.

To each his own I say, so I can only tell you what I do with my kids. I never took them that young, heck at 7 months I still had that neck brace/cushion thing in their car seat in my daily driver just because they are like bobble heads at that age. At the end of the day, that is your kid and your responsibility.

Why yes, yes I have. And at low speeds, they are not as smooth as a TJ. If you're flying down trail, the SXS is definitely better, because the suspension is stiff enough to take the hits without bottoming out. But at low speeds, that stiffness is what causes the narrower, smaller tire'd vehicle to toss more, which is what throws baby heads around. At higher speeds, the full size vehicles bottom out, which is what tosses things around. Also, a mildly lifted solid axle vehicle typically has more wheel travel that most (maybe all?) production SXSs.

I'm sure in your theoretic Can Am X3 with huge mud tires and soft suspension, none of this applies.

That sxs needed some better shock valving. Lol

Thanks for the input guys. We decided to leave her with grandma and grandpa and go have a day to ourselves. I have to say, I am very impressed by the pioneer and I’m starting to see why so many people have climbed onto the sxs bandwagon. Here’s a pic for your enjoyment :huggy:
