I have a stock 13 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon. I am not new to four wheeling. this is my fourth Jeep. I have been to Uwharrie and loved it. Played around on all the easy and a couple of intermediate trails. Looking to have fun but not destroy my vehicle that I will need to drive home. I have heard of Gulches and want to hear how it compares. Overall size, length and difficulty of trails etc. thanks in advance for the info.

Uwharrie is youre answer, the Gulches is awesome but it is more obstacle focused. I would also recommend potts mtn Virginia, great scenery and moderate trail that you are perfectly capable of.

About Potts mtn. What about length and number of trails compared to Uwharrie. Are there alternative trails if I find one too difficult? How about camping?

Potts mtn is a one trail deal, it is actually a county road, the trail is only moderate, id say anything 31,s or above is fine. The trail has certain places that are optional and/or options on lines to take. The scenery is awesome, there are no atvs or dirt bikes allowed(tagged legal vehicles only) and the trail is very clean.
There is a campground right near the trail head(free, no electric) that is very nice.
The closest town is new castle va, the trail and campground good 15/20 mins from town so take youre food with you.

If I had to compare it to Uhwarrie I would say no harder than dutch john. Trail is 7 miles long I believe.

I have to say that Potts Mountain in the snow made the ledge at Daniel look moderate...

Gulches is a great place to wheel.
Skip is a good friend of mine.
He and his crew will make sure you have good time and not tear your rig up.
Later, Paul...
:)

I agree with Paul.
Those guys (Skip and the rangers) are great at Gulches and there are plenty of trails that; look harder than they are, are fun to drive, and will work great with your JK. of course there are some crazy obstacles/trails too.
I was there in November and there was a guy who drove up from florida in a rubicon 4door JK that followed us on a few trails and did great - with no damage.
Gulches is a different wheeling experience than going to a national park type ORV area. It's private, much smaller, and the trails are shorter but it's a blast.

eric

here's one of my videos from that trip ('87 dodge shortbox on 37's).
no, the JK didn't follow us on this one.

the good thing about about gultches is you can bypass things like ship wreck and tnt park walk 10' amd watch other rigs try it, not saying thats the only good thing about it but i always enjoyed that when i couldnt do the harder lines. Skip and the rangers are awsome you can get in a group and theyll take you on trails you can do and have fun

nobody has answered the man's question about the size of Gulches.I believe it's 80 acres right?

I believe it is 88 acres and much smaller then URE. I prefer to ride at URE but if I want to beat on the XJ I'll go to gulches. It is a fun place but you can see and do everything in a few hours usually.
