This might not be the place to post but I was wondering if there is any good shops around to swap the motor that's In my 1980 cj7 for a V8 that I already have.

Thanks

Now we are getting somewhere....

Do you want it just done (hacked up motor mounts, etc) or done pretty (aftermarket mounts, trans adapter, etc?)
What trans does it have now? Do you want to keep it or put in something like a 350?
What are your goals/use for the Jeep? (DD, trail rig, mall Jeep, etc)

The Jeep will pretty much just be my daily driver with the possible mild trail ridding jeep, but mostly just for cruising with the top off. Honestly I'd like to do it the cheapest way possible, but I do know that nothing is gonna be "cheap" about a swap like this. The transmission is a stock gm 4 speed which I believe is an sr-4 but could be wrong lol.

Yes I figured the transmission was gonna be an issue but I can find a Chevy 4x4 transmission pretty easily. I was just wondering how the stock axles would hold up.

I forget what rear the '80 has....i think it's an AMC 20 (is the rear diff cover round or D-shaped? If round, it's a 20). Front will be a D30.

With a 350, the D30 is fine if you keep tires 32 or smaller, don't lock it, and have a light right foot.

You'll probably trash the rear 20 with a 350. Look for an earlier narrow-track D44. Or at a minimum, put in 1-piece shafts. Again, no locker, no hard throttle.

^^^^ and a 258 with a dual-outlet header sounds badass.

If you like headers. I don't.

I run a 258 in my '73, with HEI and the motocrap 2100/1.08. Nice combo, and you still have room under the hood for OBA, etc. 258 will run forever if you take care of it. And not every STHM has one nowadays.

BTW, if you aren't going to run hard offroad, you might want to pick a close-ratio 4 speed. I have a T18 in mine, and first gear, while great offroad, is practically unusable on-road since it's so low, so it's effectively a 3 speed around town. iirc, you can get a GM with about 4:1 1st (vs something like 6.92/7.05).

I would investigate swapping in a 4.0/AW4/NP231 from a wrecked 91-95 XJ. I would also do a short SYE conversion on the NP231.

Yep or a 5 speed xj which is a shorter combo and makes it easier on the rear shaft.

Just for giggles ha anyone on here done a Mercedes diesel swap in an old cj
I know personally someone who has attempted it in a YJ.
Very complicated and frustrating computer system.
Had a few quite intelligent individuals scratching their heads.
