Looking at some trucks this weekend, I know I can't get temp tags on the weekend....and I would prefer not to make two round trips. Insurance isn't a problem, I will digital insurance cards before hitting the road.

How do you transport (or does anyone know the specific legal laws for each state).

Options I see.
1. Drive home with no plates and a bill of sale in hand, and hope the officer is understanding
2. Toss a plate from one of my other vehicles on the back, and hope no one runs the plate on the truck to discover it checks to a station wagon.
3. Guys I know that buy school buses say that put a piece of paper (or spray paint) "in transport" where the plate would be.

I’d drive it. Legal? No idea but I’d drive it as long as I had insurance.

I am for sure driving it back.....just looking for opinions on which option is the closest to legal / least likely to result in me talking to an officer on the side of the highway.

I am leaning towards no plate with the tag along vehicle close behind.

bill of sale and proof of insurance, you may still get a ticket for no tag, but you have proof and could fight it if need be...

you’ll get in deeper for no insurance than you ever would for no tag, proof of insurance in your name to that vehicle validates your purpose.

Always gone with number 1 myself. Think that's the right way to go. Fictious tag = big fine iirc

Yep.
Insurance & no tag.

Fictitious tag not something you want to do. No plate is much better. Have the person going with you follow you.. that's what I've usually done. Never any problems but your miles may vary.

xwhatever on not a fake tag...that typically won't end up well for you!

If the selling individual is willing, maybe he could leave the tag on it and you overnight ship it back to him. Just a thought. As long as you don’t hit tolls or rob a bank with his plate.
^this works too...my brother actually did this when he bought his F250 then mailed it back to the guy when he got home.

That's what I usually do, buying or selling. But people also generally tend to trust me even if they don't know me, and I am pretty trusting of people unless they give me a reason to think otherwise.

I’ve even turned a tag in for a guy and sent him the receipt.

Easier to get forgiveness than permission.Id roll it to the house and not think twice.

your generally automatically covered if you purchase a vehicle providing you have proof of insurance for up to 30 days ( however you should let you insurance agent know asap that you will be adding another vehicle if i had a bill os sale i would just drive it. if it really bugs you get a movement permit. they are pretty easy to get and cheap.

Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

I get those Virginia ones all the time, On line, cheap and easy, Problem is you have to be a have a Virginia Driver's license, And the vehicle has to have been registered in Virginia previosly, Or it won't show up to give you a trip permit.... NC doesn't seem to have an online option :(

Even out of state, you can stop by any highway patrol detachment and get one of them.

Surely you know someone with a trailer if you're that worried about it.

Not super worried about it, I have used the plates of the seller in the past, but I was recently told that can be as bad as putting a fake plate on it. I own a trailer, but not a truck big enough to tow it (hence the reason I am looking at trucks).

Going to go with insurance, no plates, and a chase vehicle close behind me.

For you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using the sellers plates. For the seller, there's the risk you will do something stupid, but a bill of sale should pretty much cover them.

yup...
she was a trooper though! She had the dog vehicle, which meant she drove with all the windows down (and the AC pouring out of them) while I rode in the new truck with the windows up and the AC on.
