Guys & Gals,
I recently read an article on ported vacuum vs. manifold. Heres basically what was said: manifold vacuum is better when used to a vac pot on the dist. So I tried it, loosen distributor, take manifold vac and connect to where your ported vac went to dist, cap off ported vac tube on carb, start vehicle and retard timing by moving dist clockwise (my engine is a 258 4.2L Jeep) until engine runs smoth. You will get better smooth starts, less rich burning at idle, cooler running engine (I got 5 degree less 185 usaully 195+ at running temp on the guage) and better performance. I had to read the article several times because it was confusing but it does work. You should have a friend standing by to keep engine running till you get the timing set. Hope this helps some Jeep owners as it did me.
