Fired up the old 82 22R in my neglected 84 Toyota today for the first time in about 2 months. After about a minute @ fast idle a very loud, high pitched ringing was heard. It would stop in an instant and start again. It finally quieted down after a few mins. but would begin again if i raised the RPMs. The motor seemed to run ok, smooth, and responds to throttle well. It sounded like it was coming from the waterpump, there are no coolant leaks but a slight wiggle/play in the pulley. Any thoughts on what's making the racket?

On a serious note, do you have a mechanics stethoscope?

no but I do have a broom handle somewhere. I'm gonna take the belt off the wp and see what it does. I'm pretty sure it's not a belt slipping it is not a squeal it is a resonating high pitched, whirling ring. I'm curious/worried it might be a bearing?....and I do occasionally have tinnitus but it's an annoying hum in my ears, not ringing.

Usually it's the alternator in my experience, but waterpump is certainly a possibility.

What everybody else said. Probably the alt bearing. Pull all of the belts and try it. Put them back on 1 at a time till you find out which one. I would also go by the parts store and get a belt for a pickup without power steering since the alt and PS pump use the same belt. Good to have one as a trail spare too.
