My local vet is great, I know ‘em all, docs and staff and they take great care of us. But damn they are expensive! Probably no more than others though, I have shopped a bit to be sure. I use the neighborhood feed store for simple stuff for fleas and heart worms. I know they have education and overhead and need to make profit but if not kept in check, they’ll let a bill get to $500 in a second.
What is your experience?
 
Exact same dose, exact same prescription, at the exact same time. Mine cost $4 ($80 without insurance), my dog’s cost $120. My doctor bill was $20, my dogs $150. Apparently dog ear infections cost more than human ear infections.

i've had a hard time finding an "old school" vet that understands hunting dogs. i dont have hounds and my dogs stay inside with me but come fall we spend alot of time in the woods and by end of February that can loose up to 10 lbs which is alot for a dog that is about 45 in middle of summer. i found one about 45 minutes from me and he has bird dogs to so he understands and its been great since then, call him up and tell him whats going on and he says try this before you bring them in. Currently fighting some skin issues due to allergies and he told me about some treats off amazon that he started using on his dog and seemed to help, so we will see.

I was asked to not come back to a vet before when they realized i hunted with my dogs. o_O

So church and now the Vets office wtf?
 
Friends dog got hit by a car a few days ago and the only thing that happened was a broken lower K9 tooth. The nerve is exposed so he took the dog to the vet and they wanted $4k to do a root canal. He opted for them to pull it for around $400.
 
Our vet has told us to get basic perscriptions filled at walmart for $4, saying that it would cost $100 to buy it from them.

We had to shop around a bit (even different vets within the same office are wildly different). Our first vet put our 3 month old puppy on an herbal supplement (indefinitely) because he had gas.....this was prescribed on a visit I couldn't attend, I told the wife to take back the bottle and "we need to find a new vet, dogs fart, he is factory new, we aren't putting him on meds for the rest of his life starting at 3 months old"

My vet also hunts and raises cows.

Typical office visit is $45.
3 years ago when we had to put our 14 year old Bella down he wouldnt charge me for the visit and charged me $40 for the euthanize drugs. Then sent a live plant to the house for my daughter that cost more than $40 and sent a bag of treats with it for our other lab.

Check your local animal shelter. A lot of them do rabies vaccines for $5 or so. I know Davie County does a yearly one for $5. Davidson County is cheap too, but I'm not sure how much. Sometimes Tractor Supply has clinics that they do multi year shots cheap.

What treats? My dog has same issues off and on, I'm always looking for new ideas on treating them.

Just be glad your doctor doesn't have to take your temperature the same way they take the dog's temperature.

AMEN Brother!
Our local vet is mostly loved for his doctoring, but hated by some for other things (largest private landowner in the county, County Commissioner, and generally NO bullshit kinda guy).
First vet I've EVER seen that will tell you like it is vs. what puts the most cash in his pocket.

When one of our house cats (wifes "fav")got pretty sick last year... vomiting/diarrhea/dehydration/generally disheveled... the lab work (fairly extensive), meds/IV and 2 night stay barely cracked $100
We've seen the usual dogs & cats, but have seen several HUGE fawkin' snakes, goats, sheep, rats/guinea pigs and once an entire 3-axle trailer FULL of calves (though he has a rig just for those remote visits)
