VFD or Rotary?

I have a Coffing 2-ton electric chain hoist. 230/460v 3 phase. IIRC, it's a 2hp motor in it.

I have been running it on my 3 phase generator, but that's a PIA, so am thinking about a phase converter. Which would work best, be most economical, adaptable to future machines, etc...rotary, or VFD?

This company and nothing else for my shop. Outstanding product, great support, and Crystal clear instructions.

No experience but personally I'd go with a VFD for the simple fact of speed control. That and they are not bad priced.

Why not just swap out the motor for a 2hp single phase? Check out automation direct. An individual can get a motor for pretty dang cheap from them. All you need to know is your frame size

Reworking the switching might be a little tricky but both of my hoist's are single phase so it can't be but so hard.

Do you have other 3ph machines already that you could use a phase converter for?

I have an American Rotary rotary phase converter. It works. Reliable, quiet, efficient, but not cheap. If VFD will meet your needs, do it. But a rotary phase converter will make it easier to collect large, cheap machines that you don't need :D

I personally would sell it and get a single phase or air powered hoist. But if you wanted to keep it I'd say vfd. Having to turn on an rpc and listen to it any time you wanted to use the hoist would get old. And like Chris said, you'd have at least a little bit of speed control.
