Service dept should be able to tell you. But it might be too old. It should also be on your truck's build sheet if you still have it.

Ain't got the build sheet, but will give service dept a call tomorrow.

Was hoping I could find out, without taking the cover off and counting - but afraid I may have too. Not sure how many fingers and toes it'll take - more than 10 each, and I'm lost.

Thanks,
T.

Did you look at the bolts holding the diff cover? There is likely a tag that will tell you.

And if nothing else works..., jack one wheel up and give it two turns while counting the pinion rotations.

Looked at the bolts, no tag:confused:. Can't turn the wheel (or count that way), ring and (or) pinion is stripped. Mechanic had to lock it into 4 wheel drive, to load on the trailer.

Might have to pull my shoes off to count, once we get the cover off (which stinks:poop:).

Hey... I'm in Lenoir - ain't too far from ya.:bounce2:

it is also stamped on the axle tube on passenger side top of tube or towards the front of the vehicle 3-6inches from hogs head. you will swear it is not there, but just keep cleaning it with a wire brush and you can find it, lot of grime hides it and it is not a huge stamp, if the tube is rusty soemtimes its etched away but usually grime saves them.

dont lots of the chevys have a sticker in teh glove box with codes? i know my friends 92 had one, that is how we found out the ratio

The sticker will be in the glove box and the codes will all be in alphabetical order. Just go down to the G's and you should see one of these codes.
Ratio codes are as follows:
GU2 - 2.73
GU4 - 3.08
GU6 - 3.42
GT4 - 3.73
GT5 - 4.11
The G80 (gov-lock) code will be right next to the ratio code, if the truck has it. Hope this helps. As far as I know these axle codes are the same in all GM trucks from 1982 up to now. Hope this helps.

Best way is to pop cover and read stamped numbers on ring gear. Axle tube numbers won't help if gears where ever changed. Just my 0.02

And we have a winner.....

41 12 = 3:42

Thanks.

Need a whole rear end, to fit an 89 Suburban. It's a 10 bolt, 8.5 inch rear.

Anyone have a cheap 'en?
