My 16 year old sister called me tonight very upset.

Someone was texting her horrible things and wouldn't tell her who they were or answer the phone.

I called the number and texted with no response, I then put on facebook to see if anyone I knew recognized the number. After a short while and many friends calling/texting the number without results, we find out the number is owned by Bandwith.com which is a VOIP provider.

So whoever this person is, has paid for a service just so they can harass my little sister?

How can I find out who this is?

Any help would be appreciated.

So...someone is making free phone calls/texts via the internet is basically what I gather. Hadn't ever heard of it and had to look it up. I'd go to the service provider and see if they can block the number or something.

Yeah I had never heard of it either. Apparently it isn't free it is something they are paying for and it is based out of Raleigh.
I looked into the company and they basically say "Tough shit" unless I am an LEO.

Call your phone company and tell them that you're receiving harassing and abusive calls and texts from that number and want it blocked.

You can block it yourself if you're on verizon.

Depens on how much trouble you want to go through.

She is 16..are the comments sexual in nature?

If so..a call to the sherriff;s office might catch the right attention.

You might think about calling the local media and see if they would do a story on it, since it's bullying and there seems to be a lot of news about bullying via text and computer they might do an investigation on the company and get it unwanted attention and they might close shop. All really depends on how far you wanna push it.

Alright to answer all the questions.

The texts are mostly dumb shit insults calling her vulgar names, two messages were sexual but not to the point I would involve police yet, the last text she got last night said "I am going to make your life a living hell"

She has blocked the number already, I should have said that, (We are Verizon) but the site claims the person can just change to another number at the click of a button and continue to harass her if they so choose.

I would much rather just find out who this is, if its an adult (over 18) that would lead to other actions but if this is some 15-16 year old classmate of hers just messing around then I will wash my hands of it and let her handle it.

The way the world is though and recently hearing about a local guy who said "In my dreams you are 23" to her... I just worry and want to make sure she is safe.
