I have a 1999 Tahoe with the Vortec 5.7. I took off the stock airbox and just left my K&N air filter out in the open under the hood (poor man's cold air intake without a heat shield). Just read some where that this might hurt my MAF?

First, does MAF stand for Mass Air Flow sensor?

Second, why would this set up hurt it?

yes, and an over-oiled filter could allow oil to be sucked onto the MAF, causing it to malfunction.

So basically I need to put the stock box setup back on?

Not at all, just dont over-oil the filter... or if you arent too confident in that method you could buy an AEM 'Dry-flo" filter.

Ahhh, I gotcha, thanks for the info

I agree. I work at autozone and have seen many people buy and install a K&N filter in my parking lot. Leave, only to show back up 5 mins later with a check eng. light on. Pull the codes and shows a mass air sensor malfuntion. I would recommend just buying a dry filter. You can also get a little better air flow on that stock intake by removing the air baffle. The box that actually says vortec on it just clamps on. A cap from a can of paint takes its place perfectly.
