Vw guys?

Looking at a few cars for a back up car,

Dont know anything about vws any info would be great.
97 golf gti non turbo auto(looking
at two of these) 160k and 172k
01 jetta gls auto 190k
01 passat v6 auto 188k
 
If it were me I would stay away from and 05 and older VW autos. Firsthand knowledge. The 01m transmission is typically known as junk.
 
Yea my sister has owned a couple vw's from a 94 to a 98 and they were 5 speed's and all of them lost reverse she's still driving the 98 but she has to park on a hill or push any time reverse is needed and i do any of the work to them that's been done and there a pain in the ass to work on
 
I don't know what it is.....but VW's unless its a TDI with a manual...just all suck. I had a mkIII and it was fun for the first couple of months...but then the suck came. leaked, very underpowered, something was really wonky with the electrical system.
plus the fact that I had to take it to a VW specialist to have it worked on...which I didn't mind because I found a friend in that but I don't think I would ever own a VW unless it was an early model GTI.
oh yeah...the Autos SUCK!
 
I've owned a couple VW manuals, never owned an auto, HOWEVER, a friend of mine has built a fairly successful business around VW automatics(he doesn't own a VW auto either, just makes $$ off of them). any of the above, i'd run away fast from, especially the V6 Passat.
 
autos is not vw strong suit but they do ok. Manual tranny are dynamite tough.
tdi is vw strong suit. After that the 1.8l and the 2.0l are decent engines.
The v6 drink gas, they are powerful, but a pain to work on.

The secret to vws is if they are regularly maintained they do well, but if the previous owners did not do their part then you could be getting someone else problems.

I have had 5 different jettas one from each generation and while they have their differences they all have not been bad to work on
 
I talked the guy with the gti golf auto with 160k down to 1200 gonna drive it see if its worth a damn.

Cant seem.to find any 5 speeds for my price range for 2500.
