I carried a friend to walmart to buy a set of tire for his truck. The girl behind the counter said that the first number on the tire size was the width. I told her that it was not it was the height. She then went and asked the guy changing oil who was right and he agreed with her. I hope he was putting oil in the right hole.

What size tire were you asking about? IE. 285/75/16 The 285 is the width across the tread where as the 75 is a percentage of the tread width as to how tall the side wall is. But yes a 35x12.50, the first number would be how the tall the tire is.
