I'm hoping to start building the bed for my peterbilt soon. I've got by with my chop saw for years but I've always wanted/needed a bandsaw. Hoping for something capable of 5.5"-6" inch material and around 500 or less. Any suggestions? I'll spend more if need be to get what I need.

An old Kysor Johnson or Dake Johnson 7x12ish bandsaw should be around the top of your price range and do just what you need. They are good quality, simple, reliable made in USA machines that you can still get parts for (but you won't need too!).

Craigslist my best option for searching?

Yep, especially if you're willing to drive a little bit.

Rong Fu makes a decent Taiwanese saw, I had one of those for years. @GONOVRIT had one he was trying to get rid of a few years ago, but it was still at his shop last time I was over there.

Porta band with a stand for vertical stationary work a option? Their all over internet for cheap and stands are roughly 100-150 I picked up a Milwaukee for $30 that needed a roller on it and blade! Not sure if that'll work for what ya doing but I also allows for portability if needed!!

Bandsaws are hard to beat. The import 7x12s are great for the most part, especially if you can find one used, in good shape, and that the owner isn't too proud of. The biggest downside is the tilting vise. If you've got to put a 45° on the end of a 20' stick, you have to find somewhere for the stick to swing. If you can find an Ellis used, you might be able to pick up an Ellis 1600 for somewhere in your neighborhood. Ours has been great.

Come to think of it, I may have one for sale soon. Gonna have to see if I get it first, though.
