Warn Winch upside down?

Anyone know if mounting an Warn winch (M8000 or the various 9k models) will be an issue? I assume there is some sort of oil in there, not sure if this will cause a leak.

Ok, now...WHY?

I am looking at doing an install just behind my stock bumper on the Land Cruiser (1993 model) I am not sure there is enough gap between body/bumper to switch from free spool and back.

This will be tucked between the front rails, I might be able to reach all the way around/up and switch but can imagine the confusion at trying to tell someone else how to do this if I am trapped in the rig when needing a tug.

Upside down, then the handle would face downward, much easier to get to I am guessing...

Ok, so thoughts?

I'd think you'd be fine. I've seen a lot of winches mounted upside down. There should only be grease in the gear case, not oil.

My only fear would be exposing the lever to damage from below. The only Warn I know of that uses oil in the gearcase is the 8274. The rest are planetary assys, and simply use grease.

i'd mount it the right way and either rotate the end housing where the lever faces back or the front if there is a way to get through the bumper to it. On a m8 type, you just remove the cap screws on the end and clock the housing, replace screws. But I would definately have the tray underneath, i wouldn't wanna rest the weight of my rig on a rock via winch housing.

FWIW, the Warn winches mounted on the front of military HMMWV's is mounted on a vertical plate. AS stated, clock the lever to whereever you need it. Mount it in the strongest fashion you can, and clock the handle accordingly. The way i mounted mine in my ZJ, required me to rotate the handle to about 45*, facing forward so that it would clear the bumper
