So the network nazi's are about to lock down our internet connection, and I'm 95% sure it's gonna include message boards.

Since I'll go through withdrawls without the boards, I needed something.

Sooo.. why not remote control my home PC, and surf from there?

There's plenty of software packages out there, from free to $100+.. I figured I'd give a free one a shot - logmein.com - I'm on it now, using Logmein Free.

So far, so good! The lag is minimal, and though I'm only getting 256 colors, the tradeoff is worth it. We'll see how it does when the rest of the company starts draining our internet pipe, but right now, it's sweet!

Nice thing is, you don't need any dynamic DNS services.. It's a one-shot deal. Pretty damn easy setup too!

Bada bap baah baaaah - I'm lovin it.

If you have Windows XP, you can also remote desktop.

If the geeks lock down that port, you can change the listening port on your work p.c. to a telnet port which is usually left open on most networks since the geeky IT people use it often.

I used RDP back to a static port/IP on my router to access the home PC from the office.

Any network admin worth their salt will have blocked the telnet port (23) from the get go... HUGE security hole!

RDP? Weeek sauce. easy to monitor.

Sniff this, bitches! (Network sniffers that is)

We have tools that gather and display everything going outbound, from port 80 http, to instant messaging, you name it... UNLESS it's encrpyted traffic.

We only have very defined ports open on the firewall, and this just appears as normal SSL/SSH traffic. :)

Yea, I'm running RDP two ways. 1 over a nice pleasant SSL tunnel on port 37, (I mean everyone wants the time right?) or more often, (our internet pipe from here sucks) I remote into a server that does customer reporting in a DMZ at corporate that happens to allow outgoing remote desktop. :p

This forum, slashdot, and the register are about it for legit surfing from here. (Oh and all the espn sites.)

Edit: Aren't you the network Nazi there Rich?
(I used to be it here, then I just had open unfiltered internet from my IP. Made it easier of course it was for testing our umm, ermm, umm, VPN software. that's it.)

RDP can be moved to a different port. I also like UltraVNC with the video driver package installed. It is almost as good as RDP.
