Remington is (finally) recalling over 1,000,000 model 700 rifles due to a design flaw in the safety system.
There are multiple deaths tied to the flaw.

Some rifles have discharged while ENGAGING the safety or racking the bolt.

There is no replacement for gun safety and treating every gun as if it is loaded at all times, however this could catch even the best of us.

Go to their website and enter your serial number to se if your gun is included in the recall.

Thanks Ron. The 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD I just bought is part of the recall based on the visual appearance of the trigger. The actual recall site is down right now.

I think the problems go back to the 70s, My brother has an 80s left handed one and we both tried to make it dryfire ( unloaded of course ) one day and his apparently is fine.

Yeah, for decades remington said there was no problem. I've tried to make several "misfire" and never had one do it nor have I ever known of anyone that has had one go off, but people say there is an issue. There are certainly a few sad stories that go along with ND's and these rifles potentially due to the safety issues. Like you said, bottom line the rifle should have never been pointed in anyone's direction in the first place.

Funny, I got a buddy who's family shot out Two doors and two transmissions in the same beat up chevy pickup. Seems they learned the hard way and finally quit carrying it as the loaded truck gun. You know, for ground hogs out on the farm land! They still scare the shit out of me when they have guns, but them boys can shoot. Regularly they kill ground hogs at ridiculous yardages. And yearly they go out west to hunt big stuff. They swear by building off these actions.

This. Muzzle discipline is something so many people neglect. Loaded or not, safety on or not, if you don't point the open end of the barrel at someone, they won't get shot.

I hope my 700 VLS isn't included in any of this...

Agreed.

I know one guy prsoanlly who had an issue with a 700 and his story scares me, because even though Im militant about muzzle position no one is perfect I suppose.

Travis shot a deer from a box/tower stand. Al our stands are built with ply wood up to about 32" above the floor and framed with a 2x4 shooting rail. Pretty common practice to prop the gun in the corner of the box as it makes it easier to draw to any of three sides without shifting too much. ANyway after shooting and seeing the deer down he sat his rifle down as it was early in the hunt. A few seconds later he realized in his haste he didnt reset the safety. He leand down, engaged the safety and the gun fired. Blew a hole in the roof of the deer stand and scard the shoit out of him. His head was ~ 10" from the muzzle and parallel when it discharged. Close enough he had powder res on his beard.

Ive never owned a Remington..but have lots of friends that have them
