Washer/Dryer Problems

I don't know what it is but for some reason our washer and/or dryer is making all our clothes smell bad. You can barely even notice it, or even can't notice the smell when they come out but when you wear them and the clothing gets wet at all like by rain or sweat or whatever it starts to smell, real bad, like mildewy or something. We've tried changing detergents and cleaned out the dryer vent hose all the way under the house (it was pretty clogged) but everything still smells . . . .

I can wash my junk in other peoples washers/dryers and it doesn't smell, so its def ours doing it.

Any ideas? We do have an extra washer and dryer in storage we could swap out, was bout to do that just seeing if anyone has some ideas before we do it.

my guess is you've got mold in the washer basket? Do you leave the wet clothes in there for a while after they're done?

^^ ditto on this.
We're dealing with this problem right now, my dumb ass left soem clothes in the washer for several days before getting them out.
The funk is in them from the wet washer, you don't notice it when you take 'em out and put into teh dryer b/c they're still wet and teh detergent smell covers it up. Then it gets baked in during dry, and effectively goes dormant.
Guess what, you sweat and get the clothes moist, funky re-emerges and becomes smelly....

Oh and BTW, clogged dtyer vent won't really affect this... BUT it will make teh clotehs take FOREVER to dry out. Plus, pretty dangerous. Certainly not a bad thing that you cleaned out the line.

front load or top load? we bought a front load, and have noticed mildewy stenched from the door seal. we have to leave the door open to air out the seal. If the washer is old and the problem just started happening, x3 what they said. Another option could be the drain clogging, or leaking back into the basket?

Run a cycle through the washer with 1/4 gallon of clorox.
NO CLOTHES!!!!
HOT WATER.

Let it run full time, then run again with just water to flush.

Should take care of all the smells.

Fixed it for you

wife washing machine has a " Sanitize" cycle, pour bleach in the cup and let it ride ( empty) for a cycle, half cup of Clorox will run your ass outta there from the fumes !!!

WOW, I really don't miss when she does that !!! like being in an indoor swimming pool.

I was also told told with my front load to clean it out use a cup of bleach, and some dish washer power. Run it on as hot as you can get it water for both wash and rinse cycle. Then run it another time with no soap at all. This has always gotten rid of the mold smell in my washer. I have that same problem mentioned before about the mold in the seal. I was also told to cut down on the softner because it will cause mold to grow faster.

Be carefull on the amount of bleach you use if you have your own septic. I will KILL all the good bacteria in your septic system. If you are on city don't sweat it.
Ask me how I know:shaking:

DAMN! 1/4 Gallon!!!! You play serious don't you! about a cup is all you should need, but I guess if you want to make sure, then go for a 1/4 gallon. :D

My fat ass brings tha funk....when its time to kill I set it to death ray 5

Oh $ it I just dumped 2 gallons of beech in to clean mine.
I have spetic.

(j/k only used "enough").
Besides w/ all the degreasing, brake cleaners, engine cleaning purple-power chemicals that go down my drain - any surviving bacteria in our septic must be of the Godzilla variety

How do you know?

2 dead lines of grass from the leach fields in my yard. Lasted 3 years before it would support life again

I think my old roomie used a bit of vinger instead of clorox. Seemed to work fine for him

because I do not know for sure please do your research and do not blame me.

Borax works wonders also to get rid of funny odors. And it's the only thing that would get the diesel smell off my jacket when it got hosed

20 mule team laundry booster, Ya, works wonders on burns asphalt, grease & diesel.

Vinegar here. My wife's bad about running a load and forgetting about it for a few days. I just run the load with vinegar and soap, and there's no problems. And the next load through comes out springtime fresh.

Just tell your dad the washer is acting up. I am sure it will be fixed by the time you get back from URE.:flipoff2:
