It was running fine until the spin cycle, then made noise like a busted / stripped gear and the agitator barely moving. I am guessing it is a gear that turns it. If so, how do you get to it to replace it?
take the front cover off. Under the bottom of the drum there will be a pulley mounted to the bottom of drum with a belt driven by a motor a few inches away.
1st guess would be that main pulley (most new ones are plastic) is indexed on a hex head and is slipping.
Direct Drive Coupling used between the motor and the transmission on direct drive model Whirlpool/Kenmore washing machines. The coupling is the newly redesigned in. triangular in. model that is more robust than the older round style.
Yep, it's the coupling. Mine did this whe a baby sock got stuck in the pump that drains the unit. $12. I walked it the parts house the lady walked behind the counter into the back room and got the last one out of a HUGE box. I asked if I needed another one and she said not if You don't get another baby sock stuck in it. The make this the weak link so you don't toast the motor or the trans.
