My girl and I live about 5 min from Oak Hollow lake in High Point and we recently discussed maybe doing some kayaking or Canoeing....It would be nothing extreme, just paddling around the lake for a ocuple of hours on nice weekends, just to get out and enjoy a little bit of life....I know some of you on here do some stuff like that and just wanted to get an idea of some prices and which would be easier to start off with....I have been in a canoe before and did really well with it, but I think a kayak might be a bit more fun.....
Took a trip up to REI to look around and there kayaks are WAY out of my price range...
Looked a Sport authority and they have some around the 2-300 dollar range....

What do you guys think about buying kayaks from places like that? with being a beginner and everything?

The one thing I always looked for was the sturdiness of the seat. I've been in my kayak for 8+ hours and love the back support on mine. I have a Pamlico 120 Wilderness Systems kayak.

Shop around for used. I bought 2 Tarpon 160's last fall. Kayak guys are all the time upgrading. Worse than 4x4'ers.

I do a lot of fishing on the Roanoke River in Williamston, see a lot of canoes and kayaks. Check out roanoke river partners, about a dozen raised camping platforms, some are screened in. They are streched from Weldon to Plymouth ,NC.

One thing to keep in mind, if you've got a dog or anything else that will be joining you, Kayak's aren't the best option for that.

Ive got a Carolina 12. Id personally go with a 12 footer if you're just doing flatwater. Any longer and hauling it/storing it becomes a pain in the ass. Definitely buy used, or buy right after the season ends, or during winter when everyone is trying to get rid of old models. Think of the boat as an investment.
