Ways to lift transmission

What are some suggestions for lifting a Tranny/Tcase combo into place. I tried deadlifting it with a chain while someone else laid below it and guided it into place. I tried putting it on a jack and lifting it. That ended in a crushed knee and a quick trip to the emergency room making sure I still had both of my testicals.

Does anyone have any good suggestions that would help me.
 
They make adapters to fit a floor jack . Afriend of mine fabbed one up himself.
 
They make a transmission jack. Maybe you could rent one? I've never heard of someone putting both a tranny/tcase in by hand.... It would take a freakin bull to lift that up. Hope you guys are OK. You might could rig up 2 floor jacks with a piece of wood. Try it out before you get under the truck with it.
 
a tranny jack, or the floor jack adaptor is best bet. But can you unbolt the t/case and install them individually?
 
At Northern Tool you can get a basic transmission jack for 60 bucks I believe. I'v used a really nice one that I borrowed from a friends shop, it was one of the ones that is adjustable every which way. But i'v also used a regular ol scissor type transmission jack and it worked fairly well.
 
Me and TheZenTree put a trans and Tcase in his cherokee with a motorcyle jack. Worked really well because it has a much bigger footprint than a standard floor jack. I definatly second StudNuts' suggestion of pulling them apart and installing them seperatly, the trans by itself is real easy to balance with the jack under the pan.
 
I use a cherry picker for my cj. It might work for other vehicles as well. I put in the T18 and D300 into my jeep bymyself with this method.
 
Depends on the vehicle for me. I have used several different methods. On a 4WD I do usually separate the tranny and T-case. Only one I remember not separating was a 4 runner. I try my best to have help. A home made cradle so to speak, on a floor jack has worked best. I have never had the luxury of an actual transmission jack. Some times because of how it fits on the jack and the center of balance, I have put a ratchet strap to hold it to the jack. On my Cj I used a ratchet strap around the tranny, hooked to the roll bar thru the access panel in the floor. One person pushes up and the other ratchets. Actually did it with the T-case still attached. In short, whatever works. Just be safe.
 
dont have a pic on my laptop but i made an 'arm' that attaches down low on the base of my engine crane/picker. This arm has a cradle at the end that is custom to what im loading. The new arm attaches to the original upper arm via a chain. The chain gives enough slop that you can nudge the cradle around as needed... you operate the picker like normal via the ram but the top arm pulls the chain and lifts the lower arm.... I have pics at home i can post later...

:confused: well we lifted a allison trani into my 86 chevy silverado it has 44 inch boggers and 17 inch lift we had in its place but the it fell and broke my fathers arm in several places. but anyway it would be easier if u just take the motor out and bolt the trani n motor back togethern slip it in under the hood
if that dont work then strip it to the frame and put the motor and trani on get all the under body work dun and then put the project back together. sorry if i dont help nun but oh well it was werth a try. :driver: :gitrdun: :bronco: :sniper::burnout:
