After the wicked storm Friday night while camping at Potts Mtn, the wife and I decided we need a weather radio. Up there, there is no cell service, so we had no idea bad weather was coming, as the forecast we looked at earlier before we arrived didn't indicate any storms.

So is there anything we should look for in a weather radio to take with us on camping and wheeling trips?

My uniden bearcat has weather band with alert, I never heard it go off since we was already back at camp.

I had one a few years ago, since all the Weathermen were insisting everyone needed it. You set it to your zip code, & it will alert your area. Well,,,, Kind of. My alerts ended up covering all of Gaston county & some of Mecklenburg. I got SO Many alerts, within a weeks time, I returned it to Radio Shack. Unless they have found a way to narrow the area down, I'll never have one! As far as I know, the Weather Ser. doesn't issue alerts to a Zip Code. They do it by County !

dude, that crap hit so fast that you wouldn't have had anywhere to go. one moment I was riding up 421 in the cj with doors off, the next my sunglasses and hat flew out the drivers side and it was like I was in a car wash. just turned the corner and there it was. I ended up driving THROUGH a downed pine tree at speed since I couldn't see through the rain soaked windshield inside and out. RIP my canoe that was on top.
my dad has them and police scanners and I dont see why he hasn't shot either of them with all the dang irrelevant nonsense they belch out all hours of the day. too broad of an area for my taste.

my baofeng handheld has one... it is annoying as hell... you put it on the wx channel and it just repeats the loop... i don't think it has a way to give you alerts tho
