Looking ideas for a long weekend in the NC mountains. Have two kids and would like for them to have something to do and see some new things. I have looked at some of the cabin communities and tiny house places. I am not finding exactly what I am looking for.

Things what would be cool : mountain views - ability to have a camp fire - water/streams of some sort. Ability to have something to do if weather sucks. Wife must have inside bathrooms and AC/heat options. :)

Find a KOA, I'm in the same situation as you, 2 kids and wife is somewhat of a princess. Stayed at the KOA in Fancy Gap VA this past weekend. Rented the deluxe tent spot, was 100 yards from a bathhouse with toilets and hot showers, had a fire pit, had a 110 hook up, and a shelter with a sink. Started raining Saturday night so the shelter was a life saver. Also there was a playground there, a club house with pool tables and such, and a stocked fishing pond, plus it's right off the parkway so there was plenty of stuff to do outside of the KOA. Looks like theres a few of them in the NC mountains too.

Its not in NC, but we've stayed in a Yurt at Stone Mountain park in GA. It was nice. It had A/C and was a short walk to the bathhouse. It had a deck that overlooked a small lake. It had 1 queen bed and a set of bunkbeds for the kids.

Grayson Highlands campground has yurts now, too.

We have rented several houses in the NC mountains through VRBO. Bryson City is a great area. There are lots of nice houses for rent within an hour or so from there, and lots to do.

Lake lure/chimney Rock. Zip lines, chimney Rock park, chimney Rock village. Not sure of kids ages, there's kid senses activity place in Rutherfordton. Your welcome drop by my place, cook out & we have a pool. There's also Saluda and the trying international equestrian center.. Then you could ride up to Boone after your done in Rutherford mountains.

Hehehe, they are all trying really hard.

Flintlock Campground in Boone. Camp beside the creek in a tent, it's close to the bathhouse, leave wife at home. Kids will adore you for it.
And so will the wife.

I used to take my son Daniel to Flintlock and all I had to do was drive us up, set up the tent and get a fire going. The creek and fire was all he needed. They have a great store for all that you didn't bring. Maybe I need to go back...
