weird brake light problem

i have a 99 tj and the brake lights are going in and out. i checked to see if the fuse or any wires under the dash were loose, also checked the ground where the light mounts up to the rear of the jeep. i took the switch off the pedal and replaced it, that didn't fix the problem. so i took the switch off and let it hang (so the lights should be on now) and i still had no lights as i was wiggling wires under the dash, at this point i got fed up and went inside. about an hour later i came back out and the lights are on.... anyone have any ideas?

On a single bulb system, power from the brake light switch goes through the turn signal switch to (blink) the correct side when using the turn signals. There could be dirt and such built up in the switch causing the brake lamps to fail. Check the power going in the brake light switch and then coming out. If you have power coming out of the brake light switch, find the same color wire that comes from that going to the turn signal switch. See if it has power when you depress the brake. If it does you probably have a bad turn signal switch.

I have a turn signal switch laying around for a 2000 tj. Im not sure if it will work for a 99 but you can have it if you want it. Just pay to ship.

i tried messing with the turn signal switch while hitting the brakes and that seems to be the problem... 3DCrawler you are the man!!

TJs brake lights suck! My drivers side light goes out but when I give it a hard bump on the tailight housing it works? Took off the cover, and if I jiggle the bulb it doesnt work so its not a short? Same with my roommates TJ, tailights dont work when the headlights are on but work when he presses the brake? It keeps popping fuses which leads me to believe its a bad ground. I hate checking these things, but we need to get it fixed before we get pulled. Hopefully we will be as lucky as you.
