Noticed this at the Farm tonight, so I decided not to take the TJ out onto the trails

Anyways, when I put it in 4wd, every few seconds I get a weird metallic rattling noise. Im thinking it might be something with the U-joint on the front drive shaft? Any ideas?

its a 98 TJ 2.4l (stop laughing...)

That 2.4L in a 98 is extremely rare. Sell it on ebay NOW!

Yep, probably a bad u-joint or centering ball in the front shaft. Pull it and check it.

Its actually the 2.5, was in a hurry to type this up. Still rare?

Any walkthoughs on how to pull the front shaft and check the U Joint?

No. The 2.5s arent as rare. I have one, too. To pull the front shaft, take the 4 bolts and 2 caps off of the pinion yold end u-joint. Now, remove the 4 bolts out of the t-case yolk that holds on the CV end. Take out the driveshaft, check the u-joints for free movement. Roll the cv around and make sure there's no binding in any position. Clear as mud?

yeah its a 2.5. I dont think they had 98's with 2.4l engines according to the VIN decoder I used.

Yeah...pretty much as clear as mud.

We're pretty much beating a dead horse. I was joking about the 2.5/2.4 thing. The 2.4s were mid 2000s, like 2004 or 2005, IIRC. Just take out the bolts that hold in the DS. It'll be obvious on how to do it.

Could be alot of things, mine was doing something like that turned out to be the transmission!!!

I get a rattle when im in any gear besides neutral and park. Shop said it was a transmission problem. Just a loud clicking/rattling metal noise. No idea.

just like sayd above ^^^ could be alot of things... mine did the same thing and turned out to be the bearing in the T-case were shot.
