so friday i welded my dana 35 spider gears to get some better traction. now some times only the rear right side tire will spin and the left wont. i mean there welded so how is possible? they both spin now but only one sometimes. so wtf?

Chock front tires on flat surface. Put it in neutral. Jack up the axle under the diff so both tires are off the ground. Turn the driveshaft. Both tires should turn in the same direction. If not, then your welds were :poop: or you broke a shaft and dont know it.

See if u can get the tires to turn independently with them in the air as well. If one wheel turns and the driveshaft AND opposite wheel doesn't move then you broke that shaft.

^^^I was gonna say about the same^^^ I would also try jacking one side up at a time just enough to get one tire off the ground with the trans in gear.If you can turn that tire that should give you a good indication.

If it is a c-clip axle and he broke a shaft, wouldn't the wheel have fallen off by now?

yep. his profile says '92 XJ so it would be a C clip version. I guess he popped the welds..

Pull the diff to weld it? MIG/FCWAW? Needs to be good and clean for MIG/FCWAW.. Might be able to stick weld it greasy but I've never stick welded (my brother in law "truck mechanic" says 6013? or something rod will work even if it is, but on a diff I'd clean it anyway).

its a 93 two door

sounds like the spiders didnt get welded and they are still turning. If the shaft broke, the wheel/drum plus 95% of the axleshaft would slide out, BTDT.
Jack it up, see whats going on. Pull the diff cover.
Did you pull the carrier to weld it up?

i pull the diff cover and welded it after some cleanin of course. but its still workin most of the time and the axle hasnt came apart at all. it aint made no big bangs or nothin. its workin fine right now because i just cut some donuts in the snow with it

OK, still is a C-Clip. If you snapped a shaft your wheel and axle snapped piece should/will part ways with the axle.. How'd you do the welding?
welded it with a 6010 stick. ac machine and the axle has parted yet and its woorkin fine right now

6010 on an ac machine? maybe 6011 on ac? or 6010 on DC.

Did you do it like this?

ive welded a bunch of diffs in my days only had the 1st 2 break i found out what i was doing wrong and have welded prolly 30 or so since with no breakage you never weld the spider gears together. weld the side gears (the ones with the splines in them for the axles) weld them to the carrier. if your welds are good you will start to break axle shafts. lol good luck

This and we weld it ALL together, several broken shafts on several rigs, no diff failures. When you think its welded enough, go back and do a little more. leave room for the c-clips though.

you have to look at the end of the axle shaft to see them I think been a while since I rebuilt my Dana 35. Unless it is not a stock dana 35 there are definately C-clips holding the axles in. If you removed the carrier to weld it you had to pull out the shafts and the clips hold them in so you had to remove the clips.
