Welding a 8.25

I want to lock my rear axle and know you can weld the spider gears. I have the Chrysler 8.25 axle in my xj and think it is not a terrible idea. I only run 31's and pretty conservative when it comes to wheeling. This is my dd and i can live with the tires chirping a little.

Oh the Jeep is a 92 and came with a factory limited slip so i need to find a new carrier. I was going to post a wanteed add for one or go to a pull apart and snag one that might be in good condition. Will any year 8.25 from a cherokee work? I have heard there are two differnt spline counts that the 8.25 has. Have no idea what mine is

Someone head me in the right direction?

Well, I believe 1996/7 they changed splines from 27 to 29. Also when you change out the carrier you will need to readjust the backlash, I believe. Someone who has setup rear ends before could tell you for sure.

I would seriously recommend against welding the rear for a DD XJ, its more than a little chirp now and then, more like a howl ever time are in a parking lot/gas station, etc.

Is a Lock Rite or NoSlip a drop-in to a LS carrier, or would you be looking for a new carrier also? Don't think so, you might be best to find a complete used open 8.25 (nc4x4, pullapart, DHGRiffin) and swap axles. I know its a lot more cost than welding. I bet its a lot less labor, if you consider re-setting gears in the new carrier to old housing.

That being said, the 27 spider gears can be found in most 8.25, as mentioned above, they changed to 29-spline shafts with the XJ facelift in 97. The 8.25 was also used in the Dakota and durango...not sure what spine counts were used when.

and i was told that a t-bar from a s10 will fit in the axle tube and turn the hex on the adjusters. cheep tool . :huggy:

and dont weld it. lock right it.
