Welding Lessons....

what type of welding you gonna be doin chris?; i would like some tig learn'n...don't own one yet but soon.
 
For these first classes I'll be doing MIG. Most of the guys have said that they want to learn MIG because its the most common they'll use. I can definitely do a TIG class if you'd like. Maybe if you want to come down on Saturday the 21st we could throw in some TIG stuff.
 
If anybody actually shows up for the class and I see that there is some real interest in it. I'm gonna try to make it a regular thing I do on a certain day maybe every two weeks or something at a certain time.

Man, you're fixing to know what sleep depravation is shortly when that baby comes, and it last for at least 3 years. You get that thing fixed with your eyes?

You're buddies next door (Foil's) just got a shredder, you need to check it out once it's up and running, talk about destruction.

In A&P School our first welding class (Summer in Daytona Beach, FL, open shop, no ac or heat, always after lunch, sweat running all over) the instructer used the hammer test always. Instructer would walk around with a sledge hammer, pick up your piece, put it in a vice and beat on it, if it didn't come apart he'd saw it in half to check the penetration.
 
Sounds like an awesome opportunity, I'd expect that most in attendance will learn more in a few days than they would taking a class at CPCC.

Yep it's a girl. Andi Jade Marshall!

I still have every intention to do class this Wednesday the 18th at 5:00 pm and this Saturday the 21st at 10:00 am. I'll be doing mig welding. We'll start with some general info about machines and consumables. Then we'll do some actuall welding. Everybody that shows up will get a chance to weld.

I'm hoping to make both welding times, saturday is a definite, wednesday is kinda up in the air as yet. Awesome that you're offering this! Looking forward to it!
 
Ok guys, just to let you know, I will be in the shop tomorrow cleaning up for the class. I will have waivers for you guys to sign when you arrive. No one will do any welding till they have signed it. If you won't sign it you will be asked to leave the shop until you'd like to sign it. I have said that it will be 20 bucks a man per hour. The time will start at 5 o'clock. If you are late, then you are shorting yourself. If you leave in the middle of an hour period you will be shorting yourself. I will not be able to prorate your time if you leave early or arrive late. I will be available for the class for up to 3 hours, so from 5:00 - 8:00pm. Any of you are welcome to leave at any time during those three hours, your payment will be rounded up to the nearest hour. For example if you get there at 5:00 and stay till 6:45 you will pay for 2 hours.
I will have buddies attending also. They will be paying. No one will be attending for free. I will be fair, if one of you has to pay all of you will have to pay. I'm not at all trying to be an ass or rip any of you off. I just would like it to be fair and for everyone to get a chance to learn something. Keep in mind this will be the first class and I have no idea how many of you will show up so I'll try to have plenty material on hand to practice. I have a pretty good idea of how I want this to go and I'll try to stick to that plan. Once the class is over I would love for some of you to stick around and give me some feedback.
The class is tomorrow night so I'd like to maybe get a head count from this site. If you guys dont mind, pm me or post here if you plan to attend.
 
I will be there for sure. Who else is coming? Im bringing extra helmets and gloves if anyone needs to use them.

I cant attend for Wednesday but am gonna shoot for Sat - Working 7 days a week is getting old! I want to know how the turnout goes!
 
Be sure and take a class picture of the future fabbers.
 
Had a couple guys show up last night. It ended up working out great for them, they got to do a lot of one on one work, we spent literally 2.5 hours welding and critiquing. One of the students was only 16 and came in having only welded a few times ever. He went from laying a very inconsistent bead with very little penetration to doing what I think was very well, he got much more uniform heat and a weld that I feel is very decent for the time he's had behind a gun. Here are a few pictures in order from the first to the last when he left for the evening.

I cut 24" long cards from .250 cold rolled plate and tacked them in a T for the guys to start with. So they were doing a T joint fillet weld.

Then we did some outside corner welds, which I feel like is one of the hardest welds to make nice and consistent. We were running short of time so he was only able to do a few but here's the progress.

All of these welds were done in the horizontal position in near perfect conditions. In the future when these guys return and I feel they are more comfortable with the general principles of a fillet weld, I'll move more into more complicated positions.

I've also had a few guys ask about doing some welding on tubing and stuff so I plan to do a few classes on that more specifically in the future too.
 
My other student (amajeepman) has had a bit more practice. He invested in a nice welder a while back and just wanted some pointers on how to better his welds. So here's a few shots of what he was working with.

I look forward to seeing the rest of you guys Saturday morning. I know a lot of you weren't able to make it yesterday due to work and other reasons so lets make it happen.
 
I need to bring my welder up there and let you mess with it some. I tried it again last night and still get get welds that good at home. Dont understand what im doing wrong.
