I have some knuckle ball gussets that I have made for an axle I am putting in. I haven't really done much welding on axles. Do I need to worry about warping when I weld these on, and would pre-heating the ends a little with the torch help? The housing is out of the truck and bare. There will be 2 gussets per side.

These are the gussets that I am going to be putting on. 3/8 material about 4in. In length.

No need to heat. Heat when welding to cast material.

To prevent warping, just do short welds jumping around so each has time to cool before going back to it.

As thick as those are I'd bevel the edge a little.

Thanks, I'll be sure to let it cool between welds. There will be a total of ~16in of weld on each end, so I was just a little apprehensive about welding that much on a brand new axle housing.
