i'm doing an SAS on my taco and the driver's side spring perch is gonna have to be welded to part of the cast center section. what is the best way to go about welding there? i don't have access to an arc welder either.

It is NOT cast steel. If you MIG it it most likely crack. Best bet is going to be nickle 99 rod.

His sig says D44 SAS in progress. All front D44s that I know of are cast steel. Some rears are cast aluminum and some like a toy or ford 9" are plate steel, but none of them are cast iron which is the only thing that would crack.

You are WRONG!!!! The are nodular iron!!

Read this.

"Note also that some popular Dana axles (center sections) are cast from malleable iron (e.g. Dana 30) and some from Nodular Iron (e.g. Dana 44, 60)"

MIG will work fine. Does need pre and post heat though and some controlled cooling.

If you had access to a stick nickle rod it the best, 7018 will work very well for this application.

Correct, you can use a mig. X2 on the controlled heating

I know there are specific wires that you can get for joining nodular to mild but not sure what they are called.

I'll see if I can look it up this evening.

I bow down to someone who know more about the terms. It's still not cast iron. Just weld it. Never had any problems with ones I've done.

Ok its cast NODULAR iron, but it is definitely not cast steel. Agreed?

It's technically cast iron, but ductile/nodular iron has little in common with gray or white cast iron when it comes to welding. It's pretty much impossible to reliably weld gray iron. That's why everyone calls it cast steel.

I personally use stainless wire in a mig welder and it works fine. If you don't know how to work an arc welder, you won't end up with better welds here but it is a better choice.

I would also run a gusset from the spring perch down to the axle tube too. Even the best welds to a housing can crack/break.

cool. thanks for all the info. i think i'll be able to take care of it. and the gusset idea is great.
