I own a 98 xj classic. lift tires etc. Long story short I need around 2200$ worth of repairs to the engine. Now I can fix it or swap engines. I have a I6 4.0L with a auto tranny. What are my options as far as moters I can put in here for around $3000? anyone swap engines in one of these?

You can almost buy another 95+ xj for $3k. Buy a used or rebuilt 4.0 and swap it in, I know they can be had for far less than 2200. Your unibody doesn't really lend itself well to engine swaps.

cracked manifold is the biggest part of it, along with several blow gaskets and seals. They also found rust in the antifreeze which im not sure what that means.

Well, rust in the antifreeze means you don't have enough antifreeze in there. As for a cracked manifold, which one? Intake or Exhaust, not that it matters, they're not that expensive from a bone yard. As for blown gaskets, which ones? Is the head gasket one? That's about the most expensive one to replace, though the rear main can be a bit pricey. Everything else is relatively easy to do. That's definately no reason to replace the engine. Any other problems with it?

for $3000 you could buy a new engine and have it installed at the stealership.

Have another shop look at it... That price and explanation is rediculous.

Yea, It dose and the guy there gave me a vague discription. I'm going to get it in the morning and have the tech show me whats wrong. I'm no master tech but im not stupid. I have to Admit tho, the thought of having a small block, or a diesel, or a jet engine in there was getting me kind excited. This is also a Griffen brothers, I'm sure I can find a shade tree that could do just as good a job for alot less. Thanks for the info and suggestions guys.

you could trade it to me for a 90 xj if you want, just another option
