I need to change banks, I am at First Citizens and am not too happy with it. My mom thinks I should go with SECU but I wanted some opinions on Wachovia. Their commercials make it look like a great bank (of course) but as long as I'm going to be changing banks I want to make sure I'm going with a good bank that I can stay with for a while... a long while.
Thanks

I use both a Credit Union and Wachover ur money, I have no complaints with either although the Credit Union has less fees but not alot of ATM's...

SECU has the best rates and service you can find. NEVER had any issue with NCSECU

I just changed to BOFA last year. Not bad, kinda indifferent, however I heard they will wire money to Mexico for free. I'll bet I can't wire money anywhere else w/o some fee. Any way when I get my "payout" for being with them a year in Nov. I am going to leave them. I can't support a bank that caters to illegals!

We've got Bank of America and Wachovia. No problems with either one. No fees (wtf Rob?), always an ATM around no matter what state you're in, and they've got all the online banking stuff to pay your bills or check your account activity or whatever.

I believe Wachovia's call center is 24hrs a day. Bank of America's quits at night.

Exactly.. show me a BANK that pays .75% on checking, 1.75% on savings, and 4.5% on a money market with no restrictions on how often you can move funds around, no minimum, no BS... CD's are at 5% even for 6 month terms.

I've been with Local Gov't CU (AKA SECU) for about 6 years.

Nicole WAS with Wachovia, and we moved all her stuff over to mine. She was losing against inflation big time over there.

Go SECU. Most painless financing I've ever done (i've done both house and car there). Free change-counter, too.

If you want direct-access to more ATM's open a free checking acct at one of the other banks and keep $500 or so in it.

not to mention they usually have the best rates on loans as well.

The wife and I both have SECU accounts - very good to deal with. I also have a business account with People's and am very happy with them - no monthly charge - free checking and the day you make a deposit is the day that it posts, regardless of time.

My only beef with wachovia is they charge too much for Euro exchange, but who does that often? Wachovia has just been an average bank, nothing stellar, i am thinking of looking into SECU for the benefits as others were saying, now that i work for the university.

wife here-

Just to clarify the $1 month service charge at SECU - it goes to the SECU Foundation. They sponsor a $10,000 scholarship at every high school in NC every year, as well as sponsor the family houses at the UNC hospitals. After working for a commercial bank which will remain nameless for over 7 yrs then going to work for SECU - there is a world of difference.

SECU as well as all other credit unions are technically considered non-profit organizations. Less overhead (and no stockholders to pay) means members get higher returns on investments and lower costs to borrow.

Also - SECU employees are straight salary, no commissions - unlike commercial banks who will recommend loans, etc just because its going to pad the pocket of the employee. Don't get me wrong, there is a place for commercial banks, because at SECU we dont handle any commercial accounts at all.

Thanks for the kind words.

I was a mechanic for "walk all over ya" for a while. My .02, you have better choices than them.

Another vote for SECU.
Best part is just knowing you're just a member of a non-profit group w/ a board of directors, not just a customer for a multi-billion dollar company.

in addition to the above bonuses, their interest rates barely fluctuate... AKA while the Big Guys will juump rates up or down .25% or more in a day just b/c the average does, they only do it every few months and its set by the directors.

And yeah, it costs $1/mo for teh checking account. Big F-ing deal, it also collects interest. How many banks do that for the everyday guys that don't have 12k accounts. all you have to do is keep a reasonable bit in it and the interest is rarely less than teh service fee so it balances out.
