I stripped the spider gears the first weekend out on 35's. Put an 8.8 in never had another issue.

Spider gears. 32" tires, open diff. I was hopping on a ledge in 2wd LO, right when I started to think I should take my foot out of it... POP!

Voted R&P. But that was only because the Detroit True Track sheared a couple bolt heads that got picked up in the gear oil and drawn into the ring as well as the guts of the diff. Sounded like someone was banging the diff cover with a sledge hammer.
That created the opportunity for upgrade to a ford 8.8" axle with disk brakes.

I'm waiting for RenegadeT to post up what broke his.. :D
man, I cringed when this thread was first posted and everytime someone bumped it to New Posts.
My ECORS XJ has a D35 in the rear, spiders welded to the carrier, 33" tires. Everything was going well at the race this w/e, but the timebomb finally went off half a lap short of what was probably a 3rd place finish and A-class championship.
It had taken quite a beating, the DPG course was pretty difficult and required lots of throttle in a few rocky spots. I didnt feel anything, and all I heard was the crowd yelling Ohhhh!
I still havent dug into it yet, but I voted axleshaft...

i voted ring gear. i broke one off, but i believe that tooth got into my spiders and chewed them to pieces. happened on pavement w/ 33x13.50 ltbs. revved up to about 5k and dumped the clutch, truck didnt move just lots of noise :driver:

I saw it first hand! I knew it when I saw it about to happen. It was getting way too wet and you gunned it and bounced once and when you landed it grabbed and sweaked! great racing tho very impressed:beer:

As if breaking once isnt bad enough, the first time, i had a posi-trac limited slip and took a turn snapped the shaft and watched my 35in KM2 go up and over the car behind me with 2ft of axle shaft to it. Then the second time after i rebuilt to an open diff, my shaft twisted clean off at the splines and actually fused the spider gear splines and shaft splines together. Since then no problems. still running 35s though.
