What does it mean??

I have a 91 toyota 4x4 pickup with a 3vz-e motor, My Overdrive indicator started flashing (only when overdrive is on), then my check engine light came on. What:confused: does this mean????? Does anyone know, any response wold be greatly appreciated....I'm new to the 4x4 scene.

www.autoshop101.com, technical articles, see #17. The best diag on toyota transmissions I have seen short of a shop manual. Also see #16. The blinking idicates a problem. Usually its one of the electrical solenoids that controls your shifting or the ECU for the transmission. Article is easy to follow for figuring out your problem. If you are having shift problems, try manually shifting from 1-2-3 and if that works OK, its a soleniod. Drop the pan and you will see them. Black in color with a wire and quick disconnect. Easy to change.

Is there any way of knowing which solenoid it is? I have to get the part from toyota of coarse, so there like $191.00 each. Am i going to brake down on the side of the road if I can't get it done today? It just started blinking and it's been shifting fine.
 
Get an ohm meter and check each solenoid for continuity. I believe 5-10 ohms is about right. You can also test with 12vdc and listen for a click. That is it.

A 5 speed conversion will cost you $2000. Solenoid is less than $200. Replace solenoid about 30 minutes. The choice is obvious.

I think I'll go with the soleniod. 5 spd is fun, but it's my daily driver and I guess I'm getting lazy, It's my first auto in 14 yrs and I think I like it.

its likely not the soleniod, but whatever caused the soleniod to screw up. But you can put soleniods in it and it will last for a week or so, throwing good money away. Keep this updated as to what fixes it. Can't beat the reliability of the 5speed and auto behind a 3.0 is a turd.
 
Well, I forgot to mention that on the same day as the light started flashing the speedometer stopped working. I guess this is sort of on the same electrical system so when the speedometer doesn't work it sort of confuses the system or, maybe the other way around. Somebody else told me that maybe some shavings from inside of the tranny got into the solenoid. I guess I am just going to have to take it for a computer error reading. I'll let you know what I find out.
 
well it turns out the speedometer cable snapped somehow. I guess because of the electronics that go along with toyota trannys, it just makes the system go haywire.
 
Yea, If the computer doesn't know how fast the wheels are turning, it freaks out. They tend to do that without all the info they need.
 
Take a paper clip and connect the te and te1 on your diagnostic port in the engine compartment. Turn the ingition on and count how many flashes you get. For instance if you get 2 fast flashes and 5 slow flashes you have a 25 code. Let me know what codes you have and I can tell you what they are. They will tell you what solenoids are bad. BTW a 25 code is for a o2 sensor and you should not have that one for a tranny problem.
