IIRC same block.
Only stroke is different.
So without numbers it wouldd bee pure speculation

guy I got it from called me back...said the engine came out of an 87 F-350...that mean anything else to anybody?

Same block... different cylinder BOREs! Definitely either the 6.9 or 7.3 NA... being an '87 (if original to the truck), my guess would lean towards 6.9.

Check drivers side valve cover for decal. If missing, your only recourse is to pull a head to check the bore diameter...

Couldnt remember if they changed the bore or the stroke, figured I had a 50% chance.

So...I'm looking around on the intraweb here...seems that the injection pumps are the same on the 6.9/7.3 NA's? Is this true? The injection pump...and maybe the heads...would be the only reusable part on this motor as the bottom end was ruined by the crank breaking...says a diesel mechanic who inspected it when pulled.

my 87 F-250 has the 6.9L so i would assume that it would be a 6.9...

if it came out of an 87 F-250, then don't worry about the smell, because it is a 6.9

Yep. Our 86 F350 has a 6.9IDI.
IIRC, its as follows:
6.9 IDI 83-87
7.3 IDI 88-94
7.3 IDI Turbo 92-94
7.3 DI Turbo 94-03

Sorry no...

It did look cool when the guy at the scrap yard chucked it through the air into a 3 story high pile of washing machines...I'm pretty sure it made it about half way though the pile before it stopped moving...
