Outside screwing around this evening.......
Wanted to see if I could pull out a huge stump, put it in 4hi - reverse - gave it some gas - then more gas - then I realized my gas pedal was to the floor - then I heard a little "POP". Now I have no reverse. Drove it around the yard and it didn't seem to change gears out of 1st either in "drive".
PLEASE tell me that I didn't really screw something up. :shaking:

Its a 1992 Chevy 4x4 1500 by the way.

congratulations, you just broke the reaction sun shell. :shaking: sorry to say it is time for a rebuild.

just for note this is a common failure on 4l60e tranny's like yours and you'll be happy to know gm now makes a better, stronger shell.

Next question - what does it typically cost to have someone rebuild the transmission???
This really sucks!

around $2,000 for a complete overhaul in my area with a 3 yr warranty. maybe you could find a good used unit for less on here or in iwanna. hope that helps some.

there is a place here in sc called cooks transmission that sells rebuild 700r4s,th350 na 400s for around 250bucks!! with exchange and doing the swap yourself is easy. dont know if your trans is as cheap but give em a call 864) 585-0487

yep cooks will take good care of ya.
Think he is $450 for a 4l60e bench job.
Meaning you r-n-r the tranny.

There is another guy closed in Clover that is a little cheaper and does great work (stewart's garage tim stewart) but he can be sloooooooow

Damage is done, just swap in a 400/205 w/ 60 front & 14-bolt rear.....on 38's.

Maybe she'll be happy then.....

If I go the route of buying a used trans. - what do I need to look for?
Does it need to come from a 4x4? ETC...

Thanks again for everyones help!

4x4...Yes.

yes 2wd will not bolt up to TC abd then Driveshaft will b in incorrect length,

yeah cooks will do anything....
and I think they give a 1 year unlimited ileage warranty though dont quote me

Is a 700R4 the same as a 4L60E? Is there any difference in the two? Should I go with one over the other?
It will be going into a 1992.

4l60E is an electronic controlled transmission.
base 4l60 is a 700 with a few tweakes.

If you're willing to spend a little NAPA has the tranny line that they are carrying is 3yr unlimited mile. I would find someone like the shop above that knows how to build them and put some better parts in it at the same time. Like coline plates and a good shift kit, it will help the clutch pacts having a quick engage. The rebuild will be cheaper and could be better than a used tranny.
