What is a doubler?

Hear a lot of people run one on their Toyotas just curious what exactly it is and what it does.

A second transfer case reduction box installed between the transmission and the transfer case to allow for an additional low range. The box can be run in 1:1 mode, or in low with a 2.7:1 (or whatever) reduction.
