bingo. Transformer for the doorbell. Typically the chimes run off of 24v AC. Those are low-voltage wires going back into the wall, they will go back to thw chimes (and may come form the button, depending on the setup).
Typically they are in the attic or basement, but this looks like a hack retrofit job.

Yes looks like a doorbell transformer to get from 120v to the lower voltage current needed
