Been cleaning out a "natural area" in the back yard. Overrun w briars, vines, ivy, etc.
I've learned that "something" in there is making me break out. Most of the vines are dormant or dead, no leaves or blossoms. Spring hasn't sprung here yet.
But some of it still has a little - there's this climbing the trees, all over in some places.

Now I'd be tempted to think it's poison oak, but the leaves are more groups of 5, or 4.5, than the classic 3 primary sections. It's also not very waxy like poison ivy.

That's what I figured. I suspect its some of the dormant stuff w/o any blossoms that's getting me.
My thinking was to get it all dealt with before it starts to regrow this spring to avoid the itchiness. Oh well.
Don't really want to wait for it all to blossom to find out what I'm into, lol.

Dormant poison ivy will breakout you out just as bad as the leaves will. Bathe in dawn dish detergent when you get done working around the area and you should be fine. The oil from the plant is what breaks you out and dawn breaks down and washes off the oil. I was highly allergic when I was younger and my mom learned the dawn trick way back when. I've since built up my immunity but I still wash with dawn after I've been in the woods.

yep, that's exactly what I do when I come in. Cover arm and even neck and face in soapy water.
After looking at a whole lot of pictures of dormant ivy, I think I know which one it is now. I've always looked for the leaves but didn't realize the hairy spine is a telltail sign too, but apparently that only appears on sections that are over a certain size so lack of it is no guarantee either.

I take no chances. I carry the while bottle in the shower. Ever had poison ivy on your hootus?!? You'd wash your whole body with dawn too if you had

Poison ivy can break you out no matter if it's alive or dead, dormant, whatever.

Like it was said earlier, I'm pretty sure it's English Ivy. It usually won't break you out but some people are allergic to the sun and even "gluten" lol.

Get some Tecnu man, good stuff. Bathe in it after you're around it/poison oak/poison ivy/whatever. Take some Benadryl, if the rash isn't gone/getting better in a few days, hit up a local clinic, get a steroid shot ( or "valtrex") and stay away from it.

When I get a rash I generally have good luck w/ rubbing some Benadryl or calamine on it locally a couple times a day and taking an antihistamine.
Its funny, when I was a kid I never, ever got a rash from it. Then somewhere in my late 20s I randomly developed an allergy. In fact had a really bad stint requiring steroids and didn't even realize why until I saw it in the yard, ever since then I've slowly been becoming more tolerant.

See I'm kinda the exact opposite I guess/think.

When I was younger, I could look at poison oak/Ivy and get it, and when I would, calamine lotion, antihistamines, nothing would phase it really. I ended up having to get shots. Every damn time. Now (27) it don't bother me nearly as much. I don't even bother with washing with the Tecnu stuff. I get it, put some calamine lotion on and forget about it. Done.

Yet every time, I wonder if this is the
