It's time to change the oil in the jeep. It has 208,1XX miles on it and it's always had 10W30 put in it. I was wondering if I should run a thicker oil in it. Would that be a good idea? If so, what weight oil should I run in it? Thanks for the help!

WOW, this REEKS of TECH !!!

moved !!

Too answer the question, I have a few more....

Does your Jeep currently burn any oil ? not noticably, but between changes ?

any unusual noises on cold start up? while hot ? ticks or clatters ?

My suggestion is to leave alone unless there is a concern. Especially when the weather is cold.

In warmer weather ( 70° + ) a heavier oil may of benifit when wheeling, help handle the heat build up at low speeds. 15w40

Keep in mind a heavier oil will also have an effect an fuel mileage

Per NAXJA... You want an oil with a high Zinc ppm in your 4.0L. They have discussed this heavily and done quite a good bit of research. The general consensus points to 15w40 Shell Rotella T w/ Triple Protection.

Shell rotela has recently reforulated. They no longer have the high zinc contect they used to. To get the zinc you will have to go with the chevron diesel oil or go with the valvoline vr1 racing oil. I agree with running an oil high in zinc. It helps a lot with cam wear. It also helps fight sludge. If you have not been running an oil high in zinc you will want to change your oil a little more often for the first couple of changes as it will start to flush any build up you currently have in your oil passages. After the first couple of oil changes go back to your normal routine.

A lot of racing oils have a high zinc content for flat tappet cams. I beleive they offer additives to mix in with your oil changes also.

Lucas, Royal Purple, Redline, ect.

Some more info...

There's a slight lifter tick when I first start the jeep but it goes away in less than a minute. And yes it burns oil, not a lot but it does burn oil. I've been running Castrol GTX high mileage 10w30 in it since I've had it and I guess I'll stick with that.

If you're gonna stick with what you've been using then why ask and receive good info?

With that many miles and assuming you have a 4.0 since you haven't said, use a diesel weight like mentioned above. I ran Castrol GTX (good choice btw in my opinion) 10w30 for a long time, but as I got over 200K on my old ZJ 4.0 I started using the Rotella 15w40 and It was a noticeable improvement in oil consumption, smoother running engine, and probably my imagination, but it seemed to bring it back to life a little.

take the advice given to you, that you asked for.

As for the ticking at start up. Try running a better oil filter. Stay away from fram. Go with a mobil, bosch, or a purolator filter. The drain back valve on the fram filters is garbage. It does not have enough spring pressure therfore allowing your oil to all drain back to the pan. If that happens the top end of your engine is dry at start up. Oh if you really want a good filter buy the K & N oil filters. Little pricey but you get what you pay for. I would also def. recommend running a deisel oil.

the best cheap filter you can put on a 4.0 is the old FL-1A ford motorcraft filters. They are longer then the filter jeep used but have the same threads, and oring diameter. The Wix version of the same filter is also great. Tell the parts guy you need a filter for an 80's mustang 5.0

The K&N, Bosch, & Mobil1 filters are way overpriced.

I've run the rotella 15-40 for a couple of years now on my high-wear 4.0 (120k or so, but I've been rough on her) and the oil pressure and loss issues stopped right away (I'd say all imagination but a light stopped coming on). I guess I'm gonna need to find a new sweetheart though with rotella reformulating...

the reformulation of most diesel motor oils happened in mid-late 2006. It coincided with EPA mandated introduction of ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD).

Hmm, I've been using it since before that but I haven't noticed any difference. Could all be in my mind but I get the rotella free from work so I guess I'll stick with it.
