I have a 77 Ford bronco with a 302. It also has 38" TSL's but stock gears. I talked to someone today and he told me that I should put 4:88's in it. Is this right? If so how much am I looking at for the gears and to install them. Also is was thinking about putting a spool in the rear and a trutrac in the front. I have to drive to the places where I go wheeling would this be good cause I am not trying to go broke by doing this. All help would be appricated.

I have the stock axels which are a solid DANA 44 front and a Ford 9' rear.

eh...it'd be a big mess. yeah, were talking a huge headache. look man, i feel bad for ya. Tell what i'm willlin to do. I'll take the pink slip on that hunk o metal, i can even come get it this weekend. From what i read on the internet 77 broncos are pretty much worthless offroad anyway.

kidding aside. front and rear, install, lockers, your talking about 2 grand for good stuff. i wouldnt run a spool if its gonna do anykind of street duty. you could get away with a detroit on the road as long as its not a daily driver. 38"s and full lockers on the trail are gonna be a bit much for a D44.....some are gonna argue with me about this, but its gonna be the same people who have tow rigs and trailers when theyre axles go bust. if your gonna drive it home, get smaller tires or bigger axles. for two grand you may be able to find the set up your looking for in a dana 60 from some one in the classified section.

just buy some portals and your worries will be gone

While I'm all for spooled rearends on anything...this is a stock 28spline 9" and a 260x (small) jointed low pinion d44. If you're running 38's and a tired 302, noone has to tell you that you need to regear...you know--4.88's would be a good choice as well. But I would stop and think about the options before throwing much more money at those axles.

:edit: Don't know about the truetrac install, but 4.88 gears, a new 3.90+ d44 carrier and a 9" spool installed should not cost $2k.

:edit2: Sell me the eb and I'll regear the axles for free.

500 both axles for gears, 500 both axles for labor, 495 for a detroit, and in guessing 3-400 for a true trac.
he'll save a few hundred with a spool, but i dunno about axle life after it!

from Randy's R&P (prices rounded up).

9" master install kit $110, 4.88 ring and pinion $207, Spool $156-Detroit $487

D44 Master install kit $141, 4.88 ring and pinion $175, 3.92 and up open carrier ( cause I assume you have 3.50's now) $69 Lock right to go with the open carrier $234, or go with a full carrier type and your looking at $295 for an Auburn Posi to $464 for a power tracs and $475 for the tru trac. A detroit will run aroun $500.

As for your choice its up to you but I tend to agree with these guys. You'll break axles in the front at nothin unless you upgrade. And you probably will not be happy with a spool if you drive it to and from the trail. Spools are kinda sketchy on the road especially if its wet.

I run a fullwidth D44 and 9" with 4.88's detroit/spool set up and 37's can't count the number of axle shafts I've broke in the front and they are better than the bronco shafts. Ihave Chromos now so far so good. I do have a heavy foot but I'm only running a 6 cyl.

Alot of how well it will hold up depends greatly on your driving style and how hard of stuff you plan on wheeling in good luck let us know what you come up with:bounce2:

x2

I would change out the axles to full width D44 and 9" out of a 78-79 fullsize Bronco or 76-79 F150.

My buddy is holding a set of 60s at his shop that I believe were going to go into a bronco. I dunno what the gears are and i know they aren't locked, but it could be a possibility. I could put you in contact with him if you wanted. He is really knowledgable too and might be worth chatting to. He could do the labor if you wanted too. He does good work.

As far as gear size, 4.88s is about right to put everything about how it was at stock. (I've heard of using .12 x tire diameter = new gear ratio or Old tire diameter/ new tire diameter x old ratio = new ratio)

Remember....thats a lot of tub and a lot of tire for the axles you have. Plus lockers only add stress to them on the trail.

If you could give me his number or see if he would like to do some type of trade for them that would be great. Eather way just let me know.
