some one called me and might be interested in my jeep and are giving me a good number for it. i think i am looking for something more reliable that will last me for a long time that i can dd. My main concern is that it has 4x4 and i would like to have some power for driving in the moountains with ease, as i am planning to move to the boone area in the next year or so. so my budget is between 4000 and 5000 around a late 90s or newer with about 160k or less. want to get either a truck or suv. gas mileage is not a huge deal to me as i am used to getting about 13 to the gallon. do not nessicarily want to go diesel due to fuel costs. so far i have found these types of options in my range: 02ish ford explorer, around a 2000 silverado 1500 or maybe even 2500, later 90s or early 2000s ram 1500, i must have at least an extendcab. we already own a durango and are not really wanting to double up. any body got any ideas or input on mine as to known problems or woes of any of these vehicles?
thanks alot

i already own a 97 xj and have someone interested in buying it. thats what im getting rid of. its a great jeep just ready for something a little newer with less miles. my jeep has almost 220k and though i know first hand the reliablity of my jeep, i am really wanting a pickup with a larger engine. and thats a nice truck but i would prefer something with the newer body style.

cc or ext s-10. 4.3l 4wd. Yes its ifs, but it will ride better than your current xj and they can be had for a very fair price. You could even solid axle it later if you want.....Personally love these vehicles. Had a 92 that saved my life after being rear-ended at almost a dead stop by a guy doing 55 plus. I was able to open my door and get out of my truck. Sucks that its gone, but I loved that thing. Will continue to drive chevy/gm vehicles for the rest of my life.

ok so i have decided explorer is definatly out. and yeah im leaning towards chevy too. i guess it doesnt matter at all till the guy actually buys my jeep. s10 is just a little too small for what i want in a truck though. does anyone know what kind of fuel economy is in a 2000ish chevy 1500, prolly 5.3, and/ or about the same in a ram 1500, either 5.9 or 5.2?

Probably about the same as my 2001 tahoe w/5.3 maybe a little bit better. I get about 12-14 in town and 16-17 hwy.

I always vote Toyota. Since you are looking for a lil more power and looking to spend a lil more dime though, I still say you should shoot for a Tacoma. Good solid trucks with offroad capabilities as well. I will gladly go trail for trail with anyone who says that a stock Jeep is more durable than a stock Toyota. I like the look and feel of any of the jeeps, but they just dont match the thrash factor of the lil ol toys, and the Tacomas with a 3.4 have good power as well. Just my 2 cents worth.

My vote is XJ. There's nothing out there for the price thats going to give you the room and reliability.

If you could find a 2 door manual 4x4 with the d44 you'd be in high cotton.

im an xj fan too, i have owned one for two years and i love it, but it has 215k on it and i am getting too good a price from the buyer to let it go. time for a fullsize truck. the explorer is now out of the question. what is my most reliable bet between a late 90s early 2000s chevy or dodge? main concern is reliablility and not having too much breakage to deal with. second is ability to drive in snow as i am planning to move to boone within the next year or so and i want something that will take me where ever i please in the high country. thanks for all the help so far. worst comes to worst the deal falls through and i keep the jeep. cant say i would be sad nessecarily, i love my xj...

Late 90's would definitely be chevy. Dodge didn't get there tranny's worked out until late 2000 something. If you do go with a chevy, the #1 thing you can do to increase the reliability of the trans is putting a corvette shift servo for the 1-2 shift and the 3-4 shift. It increases the clamping power in 2nd as well. Thats where the slipping starts. Im getting ready to buy 2 of those servos and put one in my tahoe then the other in my s10.

I haven't had any issues with my tahoe in the snow. It does very well. I have the auto 4x4 option and that helps on every condition that isn't dry. Works very well.

does anyone know what kind of fuel economy is in a 2000ish chevy 1500, prolly 5.3,

Not the exact combo, but I've got a 98 Tahoe with the 350. It gets 13mpg around town, and as high as 18 on the highway.
