I've recently purchased a 80 cj-7 4 cyl 4 speed. I am currently doing a swap with an AMC 304 tf-999 trans and keeping the d-300 TC. I intend to install a 4" lift kit, with a 1" body lift. All manufactures suggest a 33x12.5 is the max tire size, with the 4" sus lift. Would any futher modifications be needed to keep a 33x14.50 from rubbing? Backspacing? fender trimming, etc ? This is intended to be a weekend trail rig......

Fender trimming, maybe rear TJ flares and you should be fine. I would go with a 35x12.50 , but I guess that is just preference.

UG, I will be installing the TJ flairs, but just don't feel comfortable with a 35" tire on a basically stock driveline. So, you don't believe the 14.50 tires in the front will not rub on the trail, during flex or tight turn?

That 33x14.50 might be as heavy if not heavier than a 35x12.50 tire depending on the type you choose. Those super fat tires put alot of stress on parts/steering and might be easier on your driveline to go with a narrower 35.

Since I'm being nudged toward 35X12.50 tires, I will assume that they will not rub with the set up i'm proposing ?

Running the 14.5's you may rub at full turn. You can adjust your turning radius bolts to lesson your turn, or learn not to turn it so far. If you were running full width axles there wouldn't be an issue, unless you have a LOT of articulation. Then it would get into the fender wells. If you are gonna stay with the stock axles I would recommend going with 33 12.50's instead of the 14 wides. But that too depends on the back spacing of your wheel. The more centered your wheel, the better off you will be as far as your axle bearing life span.

I have 35x14.50x15 with 3.5 backspacing on my 84 CJ7. It has a 4" BDS and 1" Body. It now has tube fenders and I trimmed the rear fenders. Before I did the tube fenders and rear trimming there was a little rubbing. I don't think you will have much of an issue with a 33x14.50.

This is before the tube fenders and trimming.

I did forget to add that I have the wide track axles. The axles are also for sale if anyone is interested. I will be posting some info. and a price in the (for sale section) soon.
