What to ask for my project

Hello all,

I think it's about time I parted ways with my Comanche project. I'm trying to start a business, and could use some extra funds. What do I ask for this thing? It's a 1987 model, originally renix, 2wd, 4.0. I had a running driving '91 XJ H.O. that I swapped the engine, trans, and wiring out of. The harnesses have been mated together and the excess from the XJ removed (rear door wiring, etc.) The engine was a reman. with about 5K on it, ran well when it was pulled.

I have around $2K in parts in it. Crossover steering, lift parts, shocks, Chrysler 8.25 axle w/ 3.55's to match the front. The body is in excellent shape, with no rust through, and is currently in primer. I have the complete black interior, including buckets (that need to be recovered) and new carpet that is installed. The frame and underbody were coated with chassis saver, as well as the floor pan.

I have no idea what kind of price to put on this thing, any ideas? Should I just part it?

Here are some pics, as well as a link to my build thread here:

and some in progress pics.

I think u would make more $ parting it out.

I've found projects are INCREDIBLY hard to sell for anything close to what you have into them. Anything that you've paid to have done (chassis coating, paint, custom anything, etc) is money gone. Basically anything like that which can't be unbolted and sold separately may have been money wasted if the new buyer doesn't see the value in it. That being said, the condition your project is in at the point the buyer picks it up has a LOT to do with how easy it is to find a buyer. If it can be rolled onto a trailer, your project is worth more than the same one that has to be loaded with a forklift. Just because you may have access to a forklift, doesn't necessarily mean the buyer has one to unload it with. So, getting it rollable is a big plus. Also, if the motor is in enough to start and run, the worth just went up. Just because the motor in the picture is shiny and has fresh shiny parts bolted onto it doesn't mean it's a runner. People will assume it's a junk motor unless they can see/hear it run. Get your project to a point that you can drive it up on a trailer and the value went up TREMENDOUSLY. Add in the ability to stop as well and that's more money in the bank.

So - that's a long way to go to say that your ballpark of $2000 in parts would be a good start to a value of the vehicle. It appears to be a roller currently so I wouldn't part out anything that's already bolted on unless you get a nice chunk out of it. If your motor can be started - even for just a few minutes, the value of the motor at least doubled.

I'd probably look at selling the high steer setup and any lift parts you haven't already installed since odds are good that whoever buys the project may have wanted to go a different direction on them. If they are already installed, only part them out if you have something to put back in their place (i.e. stock stuff). Main goal here would be to keep it in one piece as much as possible for as long as you can to have the best chance at getting rid of it all at once.

....In its current state i see it as a very hard market...750-900 ish give or take ballpark at best......there is a ton of stuff left to do to even get it to a move-able/drive-able state.... it will take a special buyer wanting a Mj WITH...time/know how/space and cash....Those are tough to find.

J/k man. :D
In all honesty, depends in the buyer and the market you sell in. Would be best to find somebody who is into MJs, but otherwise, a grand maybe. That's why i keep most of my junk, I can get much more than scrap value for some of it, and I'd just rather let it rot than go to somebody else who would probably also scrap it, ill fix one after I finish the other. Like chromerunner says, running and rolling is a big plus.

Craigslist, I'd ask at least $2k, but only expect lowball offers of 700-900.

On the classifieds here, once again, id ask 2k, may find a good trade as well if youre into that, but I'd only expect 900-1200. You would probably get a fair trade though.

An MJ specific forum or classified, probably really close to 2k

Like I said, I'm not a big seller or buyer, but that's just my experience and the same of some of my buddies.

Thanks guys, wishful thinking, I know. And it's not costing me a thing to sit in the garage until I get time to work on it more. So maybe that will be the plan...someday :handed:
