Just like the title says, what tools will I need to install a spool, and are there any write ups on how to do it?

if you mean a mini spool, just need basic hand tools, and a good torque wrench..

if you are talking full spool, it sounds like you need a credit card.

For a full spool you will need all the tools required to set up a ring and pinion as if you were doing a R&P gear swap and the "how to do it" is the same as for a R&P gear change. I have seen them swapped in without resetting the backlash, pinion depth, etc using the existing shim packs but it's definately not recommended and you are at high risk for a R&P failure!

A mini spool can be done without the attendant R&P set up, it is more like a LocRite that never unlocks.

Do they make mini spools for first gen 4runners?
How much would it cost for a shop to install a full spool(rough estimate)

ill install it for you for $150, you just need to set the backlash back. you will need, a dial indicator, a spanner tool to adjust the adjusting nuts on the side to set backlash, might need a press, if your going to save the bearings on the carrier youll need a good puller. readjusting the pinion depth should not be neccesarry with a carier change as long as your pattern was good to begin with, if it a factory gear setup then im sure it is fine. and youll need your basic tools to get the third out and the ring gear off the carrier. if you need anything just give me a shout.
