Getting a little long in the tooth and am tired of grabbing the steering wheel to assist entry on my lifted (4"/5") CJ7. Can't be good for wheel/housing, etc. Not much metal on windshield frame to install a grab handle. Leaving hardtop on so I have no need for a full roll cage. Will probably lower body lift a little by cutting bushings in half with a porta-band. tired of using a milk crate stepstool. So, would appreciate some ideas on fastening a handle overhead w/o damaging the top. Thanks.

they make those velcro oh-:poop: handles that are pretty handy if you had somewhere to strap it to....

Agreed!

Having seen how much "protection" the now 25 year old fiberglass tops offer, I'd suggest a re-think... even a 100% pavement pounder can benefit. Taters wreck (clipped by FS van doing 60) a few years back showed what can happen... notice how much of the top remained! :shaking:

Milkcrates are great for working on a tall rig, but a PITA for what you need.
Maybe one of the various "stirrup" steps offered?

What about moving to an zj or xj? They don't have the extra 4 or 5 inches of body to step over at the bottom of the door.

Just take you're jeep and a blank check to Carolina Truggies.

Actually I'd take off the body lift and put some kind of handle and the flip down stirrup.

Hey everyone, I appreciate the replies. It's not so much a problem with getting my feet in as where to grab a hold of to pull myself in. Agree with the virtues of a full rollcage but it's not financially possible at present. The "stirrup-step" is a must have for me. Will most likely drill holes in the top for a handle and make do for the time being. Who sells the S Step?

In my experience the thinner tubs on the cjs will bend with the stirrup step....of course it could be my fat ass that caused that. ..
The handle on the top will rip out first time you use it...
One idea I have seen work is a grab handle on a rope like that is attached to the passenger seat mounts..kinda like the stirrup step but with a rope grab circle idea....my last cj I bought from a guy who was 72 and that was his solution...I remember thinking it was pretty simple and ingenious...

The fiberglass top will not be a good place to attach a handle. The stirrup does give you a good place to step up on, but nothing for grabbing onto with your hands. As mentioned, the Velcro handles work good, but in a CJ there is nothing factory to attach it to. So, what you need is a cheap alternative. I would suggest putting a spreader bar between the roll bar, and the windshield like they have on a 87 and up wrangler. Will do little for protection, but will allow you an attachment point for the handle.

someone in hendersonville had a cool idea, take a length of 3/8 chain and weld/bolt both ends to the body (reinforce if necessary) and it just hangs there..

yeah until you know it actually hangs on something and rips your tub apart....thats the whole reason for the stirrups

yeah.. i asked the guy that but he didnt seem to see the issue.. i was just throwing it out there as an idea.. heck you could just make some U shape brackets to put on the chain for easy on/off if you didnt want to buy the stirrups
