Alright folks, I am gonna develop some new articles for NC4x4. What do ya wanna learn about?

My specialty is in Jeep repairs and modifications. I have been a dealer technician for 17 years with 13 of those at Skyland Automotive here in Asheville. I am also an avid offroader, racer and hired gun for differential repairs at many local shops as well.

Want to learn how to fix common cooling issues, AC issues, how to install a SYE, u joint replacement? Tell me and I'll take it from there.

We're gonna make this great website even better with some non-biased tech and tech advice.

Post up or PM me

Closed loop system updates, ujoint replacement with seal install would be a couple I would like to see!! I am a jeep newbie

x2 - u-joints. Nice to see how everybody else does it. I taught myself and have changed quite a bit over the years from trial and error. Alot more technique involved than one would imagine.

Heres a big one,, how about action to take to change a c clip 35 shaft. lots of that seen and not alot know how.

Or carrying spares w/ unit bearings. Although really if it comes do a "I just have to get it rolling again" scenario, you only need a stub and unit bearing.

cage work? i'm a newb to the hard core off road stuff... been wheeling for a few years but my cj i'm building is gonna be my first rig with a cage.. i'd rather not have to pay to have somebody else do it.. i wanna learn

Any trail fixes that are common would be great Jody. U-joint would be top of the list for sure.

I carry a ready welder, has saved many a weekend for many folks. But not everyone has one. Maybe an article on how to weld with batteries, and jumper cables. and what rods to carry, and how to store them(dry)

Drive shaft repair. The biggest thing I have repaired on the trail. Show how to measure the length, and what size pipe(cheap) to carry for a fix, and also how to index the yokes.

A simple article on what kinda spares to carry for the most common trail rigs. U-joints, wire, spare tabs and metal, what tools, and so on.

the list could be endless, I will post more when not so tired

How to properly set up a ring and pinion

Since it seems to come up about 2 times a day I would do an article/sticky on death wobble. How to REALLY check tre's, panhard joints, unit/wheel bearings and link joints/bushings. Then a write up on how to fix these things.

Maybe a rundown of alignment. Break down the different parts of an alignment and what effect each has on your vehicle. Specifically on scrub radius and the negative effects wide low backspacing wheels have on all steering parts. That seems to come up a good bit.

Other than that I really like Chip's idea of trail fixes and how to do things in the field. We can't give out too much mechanical knowlege. I'd have nothing to do for a living...

Thanks for the input guys. I spoke to Shawn and Cydney yesterday about this. Look for a first thread regarding universal joint replacement in driveshafts and also in axleshafts. No real "tech", but how to, when to and how much to.

Keep the ideas coming...

x2 on this....would be great help to learn some basics

Definitely interested in some articles on Trail Fixes. Sucks having to figure out how to fix something while out on the trail when you probably won't have the tools or parts needed to fix it anyway.

I also would like to know more about alignment and what measurments to take and what adjustments have what effect on things. I have a decent understanding of it for street cars, but would like to know more specifics regarding solid axle vehicles.

To add to the trail fix thing. It might be nice to include what tools to carry or have to do the trail fix, or even just a good list of specific tools to have for each vehicle ie. Toyota pickup, Jeep wrangler, Cherokee that kind of thing. Guys new to wheeling or who just like to weekend wheel in a DD might not have a good range of tools or the money to go buy a complete set of tools. For instance to do just about anything on a dana 30 you'd need a good quality 13mm ratchet wrench and a 36mm socket and half inch ratchet.

Not really tech, but more of a need to know. I think we need a sticky that's a good general baseline checklist of what to carry with you on the trail. Maybe have a couple different sections on the list. Tools, equipment, spare parts, etc. Definitely help out the newer folks and might teach some of the rest of us a few things too.

I agree with what to carry for trail fixes being new at this it seems like I carry alarge amount of tools not sure what to carry I carry abox and a bag both are pretty darn heavy suggestions on what to really carry would be greatly appreciated:huggy:

Ok so how bout I start the checklist thread and ill edit the first post everytime somebody adds something to it if that's ok with you guys. Ill message a mod and get it turned inti a sticky too. That way Jody can focus his time on tech.

Thanks Jody and everyone else posting ideas or offering to help!

Great idea... and it can get edited to add links to posts related to the topic!

maybe something on basic electrical / wiring tech too.

maybe how to setup a ring and pinion for popular front & rear axles (9",D44, HP44, 8.8, 60 or 14bolt)? am I asking too much? haha.

great idea guys! it'll be nice to have tech that is explained by guys who know what they're doing and not just some yayhoo like me giving advise! :)
