my TWC router unit is laying down on me like an east winston whore. like every 5 minutes. so I need to know what to buy thats dependable. anybody got a suggestion? money is really no object but I want a good one!

Are you talking about a cable modem or a router?

If cable modem, Surfboard SB6141. 8 downstream bonded channels for the 6141 is much faster than the 4 downstream bonded channels of a 6121, if you have the connection to support it. $68 on Amazon, pays for itself in roughly a year at $5-6/month that you're not paying for equipment rental.

Shit, I'll sell you mine for cheap and I'll buy a 6183 or 6190.

X3 my speed more than tripled on TWC when I switched to one of these.

If you need a router, I have an asus. I rarely have to reset it. You can probably find one cheaper than this.

Amazon.com: ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router: Computers & Accessories

This one has the newest AC band

Amazon.com: ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router: Computers & Accessories

We have the RT-AC66U, that's the brand new one, and just works as an access point. We also have a RT-N66U that works as the router and as the access point. Both are fine. The AC is supposed to be faster.

Before this, we had an Asus WL-520GU and an Asus RT-N16. All of them have/had the big aftermarket antennas to help with reception. The WL520GU seems to be a brick. The N16 started getting flaky, so I just swapped it out.

I guess it's a fair criticism to say that they "don't last", but we probably got 5-6 years of service out of the dead/retired ones. It was enough that by the time they started getting flaky, we had devices in the house with advanced wifi specs that weren't supported by the old router.

I also looked at getting the Archer C7, but decided to stick with Asus.

Also, if anybody needs a modem, I have a SB6141 that I'll sell. It was barely a year old when TWC rolled out the new speeds, so we upgraded.

I have a Nighthawk R7000 router, it's badass for the price. I bought that same Asus and sent it back after 2 days because it didn't work properly.

Edit: never mind, it was the Archer C7 that was the steaming pile that I sent back. The AC66U was my backup plan but I ended up buying the Nighthawk instead after some research.

I have the surfboard 6141 and it does all I need it to. ROKU streaming almost all day (stay at home mom with a 5 year old), computer on about half the day, 2 or 3 phones and maybe even a tablet going at the same time.

Just ordered a SB6183. My SB6141 will be up for grabs soon. Was going to get a SB6190 but I know Time Warner can't support 32 bonded channels and I also don't know when DOCSYS 3.1 will be implemented so they'll all be obsolete (relatively speaking) when that happens.

The 6141 will do about 100 mbps on Time Warner's network, but we're on the 200mbps plan.

Yeah, we just switched to 200 because its now cheaper than the 100 plan after the promo price ended....again. The 6141 hits a wall at 115 Mb, which makes sense for 8 downstream channels.
