OK I need some help from the Jeeps fans. I am thinking about getting a 1997 Grand Cherokee with 221000 miles, The body is in decent shape and the interior just needs cleaning. 4WD and everything works on it. I am by far not a Jeep fan so I know nothing about them. I am just ganna get rid of it right after I get it and try and turn a profit. So my question is what kinda problems can i look for and how much can I get out of it? Thanks for your help!

I'll have 1300 in it. Still not worth it?

$1500-$1800 all day

No point in buying it, no way you'll turn a profit even at 1300 dollars with that kind of mileage, and the state of the economy.

Next question: Is 1300 a good price if its woth keeping? I made the mistake of telling my women about it and now she wants it :handed:

Define "good price". If they are asking 1300, and your wife wants it, offer them 1k and be her hero every time you get to fix it for her. It's not like parts are hard to find for it.

Well its a trade and I got 1300 in my end of the deal.

If you are referring to trading the gen3, I personally wouldn't do it.

The worth of the Grand Cherokee is going to end up being up to you though. Weigh your advantages vs. disadvantages in the trade and throw in how much you trust the drivetrain on the cherokee vs. yours. I would think the gen3 would bring more, but I'm biased.

Yea the problem is I am niether a Ford nor a Jeep fan, I have had nothing but problems out of the Ranger since I've had it and its time to move on, Time to get back to yotas i reckon

I was gonna say its worth 1200... on a good day. They don't sell. Nobody seems to want the grands.

XJs sell, and Wranglers sell. Buying anything else hoping to turn a buck is too risky for my blood. Now if you could get that grand for 400-700 bucks, sure I would jump on it, take a $500 profit, and be happy.

I don't see why folks knock on grands so much. They're decent vehicles. Just keep the transmission serviced as you should and keep good grease on the ecm connection (also check the grounds!). But to resale, no. Not worth it. Nobody is buyimg.them right now, and that's why I bought mine. Tons of em in the Junkyards, relatively un-raped. Parts are dirt cheap. I have thoroughly beat the piss outta mine and it keeps coming back for more. Has 220k on the chassis, and god knows what on the drivetrain.

Only issue I've had is keeping gears in the d35. But I think that's a d35 problem, and me being a dumbass problem, not a zj problem. They make great daily drivers, and with the 4.0 in mine and 4.56 gears, 20mpg on the long stretches isn't unheard of. Good rides if you can get em cheap. All in all, I had $800 in mine at first, and it was a nice dd.

(Oh, add an external transmission filter and cooler for good measure!)

which motor does it have-i'm a 4.0 fan, the 318's are okay, but the AWD transfercase with them sucks. $1300 with that mileage is kind of the going price. i wouldn't expect to be able to make much off the deal as far as resale. if you keep it, the tranny needs careful feeding... the d35 in back won't last well with oversize tires and moderately heavy gas pedal usage. as cheap as you can get used grands for, it's hard to find something as capable and comfortable for that low of a price.

it has the 4.0 which was rebuilt not long ago. And the axles have been upgraded

My wife has a 95 grand with a 4.0, 4wd, nothing fancy, but 230k miles on it and I wouldn't take any less than $2000 for it because its been such a good, reliable vehicle, is still in great shape, and we are the second owners and know its history for the past 100k miles.

Well thanks for ya'lls input, found a guy thats ganna pretty much meet my asking price on my truck so no Jeep for me!
